The documentary, “The True Cost” directed by Andrew Morgan is a story about clothing, who makes clothes, how these clothes are made, and how it affects the world. Fast fashion appears as a whole new way to buy and sell clothes. Fast fashion refers to a phenomenon that in the fashion industry, production processes are speeded up in order to bring new trends to the market quickly and cheaply. Due to the fast fashion, consumers buy clothes easily and the clothes are easily discarded. However, there are serious human rights violations and environmental problems behind fast fashion. I only knew it relates to the problem of coffee production and distribution. In the documentary, Safia Minney, the founder of People Tree, says that fair trade is a movement to correct the social injustice in an international trade system, where workers and farmers are not paid a living wage, and where the environment is not considered at all to make products. I totally agree with an environmental journalist, Lucy Siegle’s question that why we cannot properly support millions of workers and ensure their safety while generating huge profits for a small number of people. In my opinion, her question explains well why we should do fair trade and how fair trade contributes to enhancing their quality of lives of workers in third-world countries. I also strongly agree with a fashion designer, Orsola De Castro’s claim that a way of producing is changing to take care of big business interest. She seems to criticize the fact that large corporations have already made good profits, but constantly pursue their own interests without considering the safety and human rights of workers. I’m sure it is time for big business to care about the quality of factory workers' lives and share their profits. This documentary gave me a lot of information on what we wear and chances to think about human rights of the garment workers. I believe it is time to reflect what the true cost of clothes is and where our clothes are from. At first, I should make myself aware of fair trade and their human rights. Then, we should campaign to raise awareness for fair trade and human rights. We need big systemic change for economic justice and decent living conditions for sweatshop workers in underdeveloped countries. One alternative is to practice fair trade. We need to create a monitoring system to see if fair trade is taking place. The benefits should be shared globally, not by a few big corporations. We should urge companies to have the spirit of fair trade and participate in the fair trade movement. We should demand social responsibility of big corporations and reduce consumption of fast
