Over 100 million animals are used every year in the United States for cosmetic, and scientific testing. Animals are used to develop medical treatment, determine toxicity in medications, check the safety of products for human use, and other biomedical, commercial, and healthcare uses. Advocates of animal testing claim that it has implemented the development of numerous life-saving treatments for both humans and animals, also that there is no other alternative method for researching a complete living organism, and that strict regulations prevent the mistreatment of animals in laboratories. Animals that are used for testing are often deprived of food and water, force fed, have extended periods of time of physical restraint, are burned or suffer other wounds to study the healing process, also to study pain to view its effects and remedies, killing by carbon dioxide asphyxiation, neck-breaking, and decapitation. The Draize eye test is a common procedure used by cosmetic companies to evaluate irritation caused by shampoos and other products. This experiment involves rabbits being incapacitated in stocks with their eyelids held open by clips, sometimes for multiple days, not allowing them to blink away the products being tested.
