Imagine turning on your television and being met by a pair of large brown puppy-dog eyes staring at you from behind bars. Imagine opening up a magazine and facing your favorite celebrity bearing markings indicating various cuts of meat. These advertisements appeal to your sense of pathos, defined as “the quality or power... of evoking a feeling of pity, or of sympathetic and kindly sorrow or compassion.” While there is nothing wrong with feeling sympathy for others, the problem arises when a generally misinformed public draws conclusions based on incorrect or insufficient information. One prevalent example of this is the way that many reports, shared on various social media platforms, depict a variety of cruel acts to animals, ranging from heart-wrenching images of abandoned pets to graphic images and videos of corporations inhumanely slaughtering…show more content…
Today’s farmers are able to reach a large number of people by ensuring that all of their products are properly labelled and not misleading, speaking to the public about animal welfare, and encouraging government officials to enforce animal welfare laws in their communities. As today’s youth and tomorrow’s leaders, we have one important tool the past generations never had: social media. If we utilize our knowledge and ability to post and share information in creative ways, we can emphasize to our peers the effect that the wellbeing of animals has on us. Whether you’re a current or future farmer, an agriculture student, an FFA member, or someone with no interest in agriculture, animal welfare in agriculture affects you. For this reason, it is important for those of us who are familiar with the topic stay educated, keep up-to-date, and strive to inform others every single day in our schools, on the farm, in public places, and even in our own homes. If we all do this, we can help decrease the amount of misinformation our public
