Poetry can be a way to look further into the life of the authors and a way to put your feelings into words. A woman by the name Anne Bradstreet is a wonderful example of that. She wrote a style of poetry called “domestic poetry” where she depicted things you didn’t normally know about back in the 1600’s. She gave an inside look on what the home and family life was like, which could’ve gone unnoted if it wasn’t for her. Within her writings, she spilled what her beliefs and home life was like. A notable piece by this influential woman is titled “To My Dear and Loving Husband.” In this poem, she pours her heart out about the strong sense of emotions she has towards her husband. She writes “I prize thy love more than whole mines of gold,” which
Poems give incredibly powerful feelings to people and that is what makes poems so powerful and creative. Poems use words that are used every day and turn it into an amazing
This is evident due the quote “my lover’s gift to me.”. The speaker refers to her husband as her “Lover” which shows her sheer admiration for him. The poems share the same theme, but present in a wildly contrasting
People can change in a split second, just like Mrs. Maloney. We can tell she is a dynamic character from this. In the beginning Mrs. Maloney is head over heels in love with her husband. Following her first murder Mrs. Maloney doesn’t fall to pieces. Prior to the end Mrs. Maloney is proud of what she did.
Anne Bradstreet: The main themes of Bradstreet’s poems seems to be surrounded around sickness and death, humility, feminism, nature, matrimonial love, and motherhood. For example, “To My Dear and Loving Husband” is a poem that shows her uncontrollable love for her husband. A line that shows this is, “My love is such that rivers cannot quench, Nor ought but love from thee, give recompense” (Anne Bradstreet 120). Another poem “In Memory of My Dear Grandchild Elizabeth Bradstreet, Who Deceased August,1665, Being a Year and a Half Old” is surrounded around death. I think that Anne Bradstreet’s poems does reflect her background as a Puritan and how her life wasn’t easy.
They provide the poet an opportunity to write a story or poem freely without limits and restrictions. The use of free verse lets the reader determine and decipher the ‘work’ of the poem themselves. Sometimes, writing a free-verse poem will help the poet display their feelings in a non-structural, non-regulated way. Free-verse poems forces the writer to create their own ‘structure’ to the poem in their own way. It is a free way of writing, and not many versions of poems give you this capability.
Poetry is a very unique type of writing. Poetry allows people to express their emotions in a way they feel comfortable. Every poem has a meaning to it, whether it is talking about food, interest, or a moment in their lives. Readers often mistake the poet as the narrator, although in many cases this is true. Many poets are the narrators and the poems are about their personal life.
Poetry is a subtle form of writing, and reviewing poetry requires a deep understanding of the elements that constitute a poem. Poetry allows us to express feelings and emotions that are inside us all. It can also be put into any of these broad sub-genres: narrative, dramatic, or lyric. Often times people associate poetry with a short, and confusing group of words that usually leaves people scratching their heads, but surprisingly a poem can also be a favorite song. Songs are considered poetry as well because it gives people the ability to connect emotionally with the lyrics that are being sung.
Today writings have been produced for thousands of years and will still be produced. One of these writings is poetry, which is “the art of rhythmical composition, written or spoken, for exciting pleasure by beautiful, imaginative, or elevated thoughts” (poetry). Through poetry, thousands of writings have been created to share people’s ideas and feelings. It is a way to share who you are and what you stand for to someone else. Poetry is just one idea though, there are many more ways to write how you feel and who you are.
She asks her readers to rise above their defeats, to not allow anyone to stop their dreams. In demonstrating how she succeeded she has been a role model for women of all cultures and races. The “Phenomenal Women” poem is a celebration
Poetry is an important part of literature which conveys an author 's ideas across to the reader through the use of descriptive language. Poetry helps an author to express their inner emotions and often incorporates various poetic devices which enriches the text. Poetry gives the reader a different perspective and when read closely, can give the audience a look into the authors imagination. Likewise, poetic devices enhance the writing and can drastically change the mood of the poem, as well as, how the reader interprets the poem. Poetic devices are important in literature because they help to convey a message, add spontaneity to a poem, and give the reader a strong visual.
Anne Bradstreet is recognized as the first accomplished female New World Poet. She is widely known for her volume of poetry, published in London in 1650, named The Tenth Muse Lately Sprung Up in America. She has several experiences that impacted and shaped her poetry, including her upbringing, family, and spiritual beliefs Anne Bradstreet was born in 1612 to Thomas Dudley who was a nonconformist former soldier of Queen Elizabeth (Biography of Anne Bradstreet). Although she did not having any formal schooling, her father took great care to see that she received an education that was superior to that of most young women of the time (Norton 207). She was taught history and literature, as well as many languages besides English including Greek, Latin,
Poetry in contrast, relies on literary devices and diction to convey meaning. The emotion of the poet’s vision is illustrated through the way the words are assembled
Poetry is art by the means of words, and these are words are ideas and scenarios people can relate to. Within poetry, language is the medium for creating unique effects. Many people believe that poetry makes unreal things seem real. The use of literary device in poetry evokes intense emotion to help the readers and listeners
The biggest one that I can think of is that it will make you a better public speaker and help build self-confidence. Anything that you do in front of people will sometimes cause people to be nervous or hesitant whether it be playing music, singing, or telling jokes. Reciting poetry will help you overcome these feelings and will stay with you for the rest of your life. Another reason is that it will help you master speaking, pronunciation, and understanding the English language. All of these will help you later in life whether it be in a job interview or a public speech.
Poetry is more than just words thrown in groups upon the page, it’s what’s underneath those words, the emotion put behind them, that counts. The feelings that the poet had in that experience, or while remembering it, is what poetry really is. The definition of poetry says what it looks like and what it’s made of, but that is just scratching the surface, like saying a human is just skin, bones, and muscle. This definition isn’t necessarily wrong, it’s just incomplete. The physical definition can be used as a base for the real definition.
