Imagine living in a small box like a mouse with eight other people terrified that you might be caught by a cat. Anne Frank entered this box at the age of thirteen in 1942 in Amsterdam, Holland. She hid there for two years from 1942 to 1944. During this period, the only source of entertainment for Anne was writing in a diary. A red checkered diary given to her by her father for her birthday. Anne’s father’s name was Otto Frank. He was a lieutenant in the German army during World War I. He was a businessman in Germany and the Netherlands. Otto Frank’s company was called Opekta. This company made fruit pectin which is a thicking agent for jam and jelly. In 1940 German forces invaded Holland, Jews were not allowed to operate businesses. Otto Frank had to hand over his business to his Dutch coworkers. Anne’s older sister Margo, received a letter demanding that she go to a work camp. Because of the letter in 1942, Otto decided to hide his family in the secret annex above his warehouse in Amsterdam. Otto Frank invited his business partner Hermann van Pels, his wife Augusta and their son Peter later a dentist Fritz Pfeffer joined the group. There were five people that brought them food and supplies that worked in the warehouse. Their names are: Johannes Kleiman, Victor Kugler, Bep Voskuijl and Jan and Miep Gies. In 1933 Miep Gies began working for Otto Frank as his secretary at Opekta. Miep and her husband Jan were close friends to the Frank family. Miep helped the Frank family go into hiding in spring of 1942. Miep continued to work for the company keeping it going. Miep continued to hide them until 1944 when the Gestapo found the family and others in the annex. Anne Frank and her family were in hiding for two years. During those two years, the family lived in an Annex with another family named the Van Daans. Also during these two years she wrote in her diary about her experiences of each day and what her wishes were. Her father Otto Frank and her mother Edith Frank including the Van Daans would try and take care of the family as best as they could. In hiding, they were not able to leave their home as they might get caught.
The frank family went into hiding in an attic an attic apartment behind Otto's business. A week after they went into hiding, Otto's business associate Herman Van Pels, along with his wife Auguste, and their son Peter. A small group of Otto's employees, risked their lives to smuggle food, news, and supplies from the outside world. THe group of 8 lived in constant fear of being discoverd and could never go outside. The family had to remain very quite during the day in order to avoid detection from the employees in the warehouse below.
It was on her 13th birthday that she got a diary. In her diary, she wrote about her friendships, crushes and her academic performance at school. Anne had an older sister named Margot, and they attended a Jewish school in Amsterdam. In this diary, the Franks moved to Netherlands from Germany because they feared prosecution. After the Germans invaded the Netherlands in 1940, the Franks, another family called the van Daans and Mr Russell hid in a small secret annex above Otto Frank’s, Anne’s father’s office.
When the Nazis invaded Amsterdam, Anne’s father took help from some local friends to hide in a complex of his office. The office is known commonly as the “Secret Annex.” Days were spent here in worry, but everyone kept each other alive with love and support. Anne wrote in her diary, which kept her motivated to live.
