Annie Nelson is happily married to Chris Nelson and they have two children, Ian and Marie. The children both die in a car accident which leads Annie to a mental breakdown and admittance into a mental hospital. She is devastated with grief and guilt. She feels that if she had been driving she could have protected them and the children would still be alive. The marriage becomes strained because of Annie’s depression and there is the threat of a divorce. They manage to stay married. Annie and Chris seem to cope with the loss of their children. Chris is killed in a car accident. Annie struggles to cope with her husband’s death. She is severely depressed and commits suicide. Annie was acting abnormal. She was overridden with guilt from the death of her children and could not cope on her own. She was admitted into the mental hospital. After the death of her husband she was devastated and could not function in her daily life. She cried most of the time, did not return to work, and did not leave her house. She was an artist and often enjoyed painting throughout the film. After Chris’s death she tried painting and would become even more depressed and angry.
