Imagine we lived in a world where no one could comment anonymously online. If everyone had to have their information for anyone to see, including thefts, and hackers. What if someone wanted to give an anonymous “tip”, and give the police some information without revealing any information about us. All of this falls under the right to be anonymous online. Which also falls under the right to freedom of speech. Even though bullies might use anonymity to get away with their actions, without anonymous commenting the internet would be a more dangerous place. Anonymous comments do more good than bad. If you do not allow anonymous comments you are taking away citizen’s right to comment what they want, without revealing who they are. According to the National Constitution website the First Amendment is stated as, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” The Constitution is in place for a reason, and Anonymous comments fall under the umbrella of free speech or freedom of the press so by banning them from websites you would be violating the Constitutional rights that the founding Fathers risked everything to create. This is why you should not ban anonymous comments from the internet; it’ll do more harm than good. If we allow people to use Anonymous comments then there will be less of a chance for identity theft, such as stolen pictures, personal information, or even hacking of profiles. According to Pew Research Center, “21% of internet users have had an email or social networking account compromised or taken over by someone else without permission.” (2013) If these people could have had their accounts and information anonymous then they would have been protected. No one would be able to steal their information if they didn’t even know their name and it was
