The opening of the movie features the upbeat tune, Another Day of Sun, which is used to foreshadow the events of the movie and its theme. In the beginning of the song, a woman sings, “I think about that day/ I left him at a Greyhound station/ West of Santa Fe/ We were seventeen, but he was sweet and it was true/ Still I knew what I had to do/ ‘Cause I just knew”. In these lines, she is reflecting upon how she left her boyfriend so that she would be able to pursue her dream. This foreshadows that Mia and Sebastian will break up and go their separate ways, so that they too are able to reach their dreams. This is important to develop the theme in that it is the point of the movie when Mia and Sebastian reflect on their past and realize that all of their hardships and sacrifices, including the sacrifice of their relationship, were all worth it in the end seeing that they both achieved their dreams and happiness. Additionally, the chorus of the song also contributed to the theme of the film: “Climb these hills I’m reaching for the heights/ And chasing all the lights that shine/ And when they let you down/ You’ll get up off the ground/ As morning rolls around/ And it’s another day of sun”. These lines explain how the path to greatness is never easy and how many times it makes one feel hopeless, but it also explains that one mustn't give up because eventually one will reach that greatness they were striving for.
