Anterior Cruciate Ligament
The ACL is a ligament in the outer leg next to the knee. Most anterior cruciate ligament tears require surgery, unless the orthopedic surgeon says otherwise. An ACL tear is the most common injury and in the knee. These injuries are happening more frequently in teenagers now. The ACL can be strengthened to help prevent it from tearing. It is just a matter of protecting oneself.

1. What is an ACL? ACL stands for anterior cruciate ligament. This ligament is one of 3 others in the knee.
The ACL is very deep within the knee. It is located behind the patella but above the shinbone. The ACL stabilizes the knee and prevents the shinbone from moving(Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Injuries).

This could happen because of a few reasons. The main reason for a second tear is the athlete going back to their sport too quickly. As soon as an athlete is even feeling better, they are completely eager to get back to doing what they love. Going back to a sport too soon after an ACL injury puts an athlete at high risk to tear their ACL once again (Knee Injuries on the Rise in Young Athletes).
11. What type of ACL grafts are used during the reconstruction surgery? There are allografts and autografts. An allograft is tissue from a cadaver inserted in the leg. An autograft is tissue from the patients body that replaces the ACL (Luks).
12. What is the purpose of an ACL? Together with the posterior cruciate ligament, which crosses over it to form an X, the ACL helps keep the knee stable while rotating. The ACL keeps the shinbone in place and prevents it from moving too far forward and away from the knee and thighbone. It also provides stability when rotating the shinbone(Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Injuries.).
13. Why have knee injuries in children risen over the past years? Children are very focused on one sport only. This is causing children to use the same muscles constantly. ACL tears have dramatically increased in the last 12 years. there has been a 400% jump in knee injuries since 1999(Knee Injuries on the Rise in Young
The ACL crosses diagonally in the middle of the knee behind the patella and it connects the tibia to the femur. Its function is to prevent the tibia from sliding in front of the femur and to prevent overextension of the knee. The LCL connects the femur to the fibula and its function is to keep the lateral side of the knee stable. RG3’s injury is due to an ACL and LCL tear. The ACL was torn when his foot planted in the field and his knee cut into internal rotation.
In this case these programs can help female athletes reduce ACL exposure by either having them participate in the programs criteria or educate the athlete, parents and coaches of possible injury. Martinez et al. , (2017) data was based on surveys given out to high school female athletes, analyzing how important they believed prevention programs were. From
Compress your knee with an elastic bandage and elevate on while laying down, the injured knee should be above the heart. Anti-inflammatory medication is also effective when trying to reduce pain. If you are not having instability in your knee then most of the average people let it heal on it 's own because they wouldn 't have to take to risk of surgery (Cluett 25). Surgery is a risk, many athletes are concerned about the small risk of transmission of infections. Diseases like AIDS can be transferred because of the true graft operation where an ACL is taken from a dead human and used as the ligament of someone else.
Having to receive Tommy John surgery can lead to various effects on one’s career. Ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injuries were often problematic early on in Major League Baseball. UCL injuries would often end careers because modern medicine had not caught on to what was happening to the arms of these athletes. Dr. Frank Jobe
What is the medial collateral ligament (MCL)? The MCL is one of the main four ligaments that is part of the knee. This ligament is a broad, thick band that runs down the inner part of the knee, from the femur to the top of the tibia, but is located outside the joint itself. The job of the MCL is to support the knee with the help of the other ligaments in the knee. When stress is applied to this ligament it aids control in transferring the join through a normal range of motion.
The ACL is most often torn due to a twisting motion from sudden change in direction or pivoting that occurs on a locked knee. (Gianotti, Marshall, Hume & Bunt, 2009). According to Sports Medicine Australia 1 (n.d.), majority of ACL injuries occur in high demand sports including Australian football, netball, basketball and skiing. This can result in serious mobility consequences and pain for athletes, as well as cause emotional distress due to cost of treatment and time lost from sporting activity. There is little comprehensive Australian data regarding number of ACL injuries that occur each year due to insufficient reporting.
Neuromuscular training appears to be effective in reducing ACL injury risk and that lower extremity strength and balance exercises, in combination with core and trunk control seem to be necessary components of a successful ACL injury prevention program (Myklebust
The knee joint is one of the strongest and most important joints in the human body. It allows the lower leg to move relative to the thigh while supporting the body’s weight (Taylor, n.d.) as knee joint is one of the major weights bearing joint in the body. Knee joint plays an important role in our daily lives such as walking, running, sitting and standing. It allows physiological movement such as flexion and extension.
Sports can be played anytime, anywhere, by anyone, and are a huge part of American culture. Every day, people pile into stadiums by the thousands to watch their favorite teams play. Millions of kids and adults enjoy sports annually in the US. In fact, 17,893,000 kids participated in team sports in the US in 2013 (Lee). While sports are great for many people, they have a downside: injuries.
The most common knee injuries and torn ligaments are in football. Some of these injuries could end your college season of football, and you would not even get paid once you have to stop because of an
From 2010 to 2013 players in the NFL suffered 219 ACL tears. That is a very high number for only ACL tears. There is many other knee injuries that are possible to happen. People need to make sure they don’t go back to sports too early after the injury. The risk of reinjury is a lot higher if you return to early.
They also slow down the reaction time when trying to make fast throws to bases. Most higher level athletes opt out of using knee savers because
Many children around the world love to play football as a competitive sport or just as a fun way to entertain themselves. While football can be a great way to exercise, many troublesome injuries can occur. 30 million kids in the United States play sports, and more 3.5 million of them have an injury each year. In 2009, 215,000 kids ages 5-14 went to the hospital with serious injuries from sports. (Stanford, n.d.)
Without a doubt, there has always been a great risk of injury while participating in contact sports. The participants involved in any contact sporting event are always susceptible to being injured. These participants are completely aware of the everyday risk, but the energy that these sports bring, keep them going regardless. Over the years, there have been countless numbers of injuries due to the nature of these sports, but still millions of people young to old gain interest everyday. While people young to old are gaining interest everyday to contact sports many parents of young children are being faced with the issue either to allow their children to participate in often dangerous sports.
Football can cause back injuries. Heat injuries are a major concern for youth football players especially at the start of training camp. Young players can get very bad head injuries. This heat injuries occurs in August because in the cold weather. NFL Players get paid for playing football.
