No one truly knows the purpose of life, why there is death and suffering. The purpose of life has many meaning and is different for everyone. Good people tend to suffer more because others get jealous and use violence to end the good. In the poems, “Antigone” and, “Prometheus Bound”,and the book, “Gospel of Matthew”, express why the good people suffer and what the purpose of life really is.

The poem, “Prometheus Bound”, written by Aeschylus is about two servants who have chained Prometheus on a rock as a punishment for providing fire to humans. Prometheus then talks to the chorus and gives the reasons as to way he is being punished. They believe that justice should be served to him so they persuade their leader to help out. Their leader could not help because Zeus was to powerful. Prometheus states, “For it would be better to die once and for all than to suffer pain for all one’s life”(Aeschylus 320), he says this to show how it is better to die than to keep living but suffering. Prometheus is an example of of good people suffering. He is chained to a wall because he tried to save humanity by helping them create fire. The purpose was to help humanity but he tried to do it undercover since he knew there would be consequences. The chorus states, “How shall it seem good? What hope is there? Do you not see that you were wrong? How you have been wrong, it is not a pleasure for me to say, and pain for you.”(Aeschylus 261). This quote means that Prometheus does not believe that giving the creation of fire to the humans was not a bad idea and is willing to accept any punishment. The moral of this poem is that if you disobey a person with more power you will face consequences. Prometheus is punished for helping the human race and doing what is right. The story is about Jesus becoming popular and a king named Herod who gets jealous and banishes Jesus from the town. Jesus then becomes popular in teaching Jewish laws and gets too much recognition that the king finds out. The king believes Jesus should be punished and killed for preaching his ideals. Jesus ends up being crucified and the evil wins. This is an example of good versus evil as Jesus is the good and the people wanting him dead including the king are represented as the bad. In the novel is says, “For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil.”(Matthew 6:3), This quote means that people act the way they feel if you have good or bad stored up in the heart. The purpose of life as shown in this book is to show how to overcome the jealousness from others when you succeed. From this reading I found it interesting that Jesus continued to teach his ideas even though it was dangerous since he got banned from the town. Jesus was doing what was

After being sentenced to death, he doesn’t fear from the unknown and instead thinks that death can also be a blessing from god to be away from evil on the earth. Furthermore he says that death can be like taking a trip to another place to get rid of the fake people. Also, it would be not smart to fear about life after death when you are actually alive. Socrates rather chooses to treat the death as a grace of the god and believes that a good person gets good blessings whether he or she is alive or dead. Also the reasoning at the end of the quotes shows his philosophy that an assumption cannot be always predicted correct or accurate if it is not proved in

Hesiod’s Theogony was no longer able to satisfy the higher minds among the nation. Thus, inspiring Aeschylus to write tragic poets such as Prometheus’ Bound in order to express his own ideology and pointing the moral of tragedy. It is no surprise that Hesiod viewed Zeus as a glorified olympian hero and Prometheus as a traitor who stole fire and gave it to mankind. Aeschylus’s idea of Prometheus was conflicting to Hesiod, whereby he viewed Prometheus as a god supporting the civilization of mankind.
In Plato’s The Apology, he arises a standpoint about death. He thinks that death is not what people usually think as a horrible, unacceptable thing. Instead, death can be a blessing. In order to support his viewpoint, he also has two concrete reasons that explain the advantages of death explicitly. The first one states that death is like a dreamless sleep for it is complete lack of perception, and then death would be a great advantage.
“He killed himself for wanting to live” (503). People suffer in order to live, but through suffering they are also trying to help others live. If one cannot get through that suffering they will not be able to live. Michael Holtzapfel is someone who is unable to move on from the guilt he has.
