INTRODUCTION:- Antioxidants are the substances that have potential to inhibit the oxidation of other molecules. Simply the name “antioxidant” also indicates their major function in the body to combat with the damaging effects of physiological phenomenon of oxidation in the cell. These oxidative reactions are going on in every cell and sometime lead to the formation of highly reactive free radical species in the cell which brings harms to cells. A potentially active antioxidant performs their role by removing these free radicals thus preventing cells from damaging effects of oxidation (Sies Helmut, 1997). Chemical Nature of Anti-oxidants:- Chemically most antioxidants belongs to class of polyphenolic compounds and are reducing agents (free …show more content…
Extensive epidemiological studies have proved that the risk of chronic disease is less among the populations and communities where main source of diet are green vegetables and fruits (Oomah and Mazza, 2000; Ruxton et al., 2006). Significant effect of diet regarding our health is associated with chemical compounds which are present in the diet. Phytochemicals with beneficial effects on health such as phenolic antioxidants, vitamins, mineral, fibres, are revealed to be present in diet (Konczak et al., 2010; Krishnaiah et al., 2011). Fruits and vegetables are the major source of antioxidants which include phenolic compounds, carotenoids, anthocyanine and tocopherols (Naczk and Shahidi, 2006). Root tubers, fruits, seed grains and herbs among other typical and traditional vegetables have been the source of food for many centuries of people’s inhabitant in Peru. All these plant species are known to carry high nutritional value (NRC, 1989; De La Cruz et al., 2007). Antioxidants are obtained by consumption of certain foods such as fresh fruits, green leafy vegetables. Beside, nuts and grains also contribute a valuable source of these antioxidants. Some common antioxidants and there sources are given below Beta –carotene occurs abundantly in orange. Also found in green, leafy vegetables like spinach. Lutein also occurs in green leafy vegetables like collard green and …show more content…
Betacyanins that is present in beetroot exhibit high antioxidant and radical capuring abilities (Escriban, 2000; Garcia- Carmona, 7 Munoz, 1998; Pedreno & Escribano, 2000). Researches carried obn red beet have proved that intake of even single dose of redbeet results in increase of antioxidant excretion in urine (Netzel et al., 2005) so they be good source of antioxidants (Georgiev et al., 2010). Betalins along with other phenolic compounds present in red beet are responsible for decrease in oxidative demage of
Amidst of hassles and struggles of our modern day, we are unable to eat healthy meals. Actually, many people do not even have time to prepare meals. Yet, our bodies still need sufficient amounts of various food groups for them to remain healthy. It is for this reasons that many people have turned to buying nutritional supplements. This way, one can still have their health in check even when they are running against time and on tight schedules.
Lee Fulkerson’s Forks Over Knives prevents a radical approach to helping America get healthy and avoid health issues such as diabetes, obesity, and heart disease. These health issues have plagued America since the invention of fast food and have made America one least healthiest countries in the world. However, the film’s aversion to taking modern medicines and instead relying on a plant based diet to avoid new health issues and reverse existing health made me question the practicableness of having an entirely plant based diet as the film recommends. Additionally, critics of plant based diets such as Connie Diekman at Washington University feel that plant based diets will leave the deprived of nutrients that milk and dairy provide such as calcium. However, the two academic studies I found through my own research support that a plant based diet does lower your risk of heart attack and when done right, does not leave your body lacking critical nutrients.
Do you know about a fact that maple syrup has same classes of antioxidant compounds as found in berries, tomatoes, tea, red wine, whole wheat and flax seed? The quantity and variety of identified compounds
The process of detoxification, (also known as detox or withdrawal) takes place when a person who is dependent on drugs or alcohol suddenly stops using, or drastically reduces the amount they take. When individual is active in their addiction, their body has become accustomed to the habitual presence of substances in their system; when these substances are no longer suppled, withdrawal symptoms set in. Detoxification can cause physiological and/or physical symptoms such as: nausea or vomiting, shakiness, as well as feeling tense or edgy. Going through detoxification in a professional setting such as a drug rehab program helps to manage these negative effects. The skilled staff members are able to provide the program participant with support emotionally and physically with the use of specific medications to help ease the physical symptoms of withdrawal.
The red beet can be considered a super food, because of its range of health benefits. High in fiber, vitamin C, potassium, manganese and B vitamin folate raw beets have been known to lower blood pressure, boost your immune system, fight inflammation, and some studies have suggested they can reduce the risk of cancer. Raw beets are better for you because the cooking process
Health Benefits Of Astaxanthin Astaxanthin For Good Health Many people have heard about various carotenoids like, beta-carotene, lycopene and zeaxanthin, but very few of you are aware about astaxanthin. Astaxanthin is a carotenoid of predominantly marine origin. It occurs in trout, shrimp, yeast, salmon and other sea creatures. The Pacific salmon gets its beautiful pink color from astaxanthin.
In the pre-lab, we read a few paragraphs on the process of the cell membrane and what happens with a beet cell membrane. We now know that beets contain a red pigment called betacyanin, which is located in the vacuoles of the cells. We learned that as long as the cell and the membranes are intact, then the betacyanin will stay in the cells.
To begin with, Pollan believes that people should consume food instead of nutrients because nutrients are being overvalued in the current society. However, many people want to maintain health through their diets. As Hippocrates’s famous injunction states, “Let food be thy medicine” (Pollan 3). Since 1980, many experts are recommending to replace the idea of foods with nutrients (3). Consequently, more people want to obtain the essential nutrients from their daily meals.
In recent research studies, the healing properties of oranges have been associated with a wide variety of phytonutrient compounds. these phytonutrients include citrus flavanones when it's combined with vitamin c the antioxidant properties are expected to be there but it's another molecule that makes the vitamin c stronges and it is the hesperidin molecule which has been singled out as the most important
There are various membranes and all have a variation of functions. The tonoplast in beets, contains a water-soluble red pigment called betacyanin, this pigment is what gives the beetroots is distinctive purpleish red color. The betacyanin is soluble in water and insoluble in lipids. This means that the pigment is contained in the vacuole of the cell while it is healthy.
Brassicaceae, is the family that red cabbage belongs to[2]. Red cabbage contains the source of anthocyanins, this anthocyanins contribute the colour to this plant. Since the anthocyanins are unique, by being wisely in colour range by its characteristic which is an indicators. This plant pH-range was very broad compare to others anthocayanins from, e.g. grape skin, elderberry and black current, which only can take a limited degree of colour at pH<4. While anthocyanin in red cabbage can perform
Objective: The purpose of this experiment is to test various temperatures beet have on cell membrane and to investigate how beets will secrete red pigments. As the temperature increases in the cell membrane more dye will be release from the beet. As it expands, kinetic energy will accelerate up the distribution of red pigment to a point where it will damage the cell and the denature of proteins will increase where the dye will be free. A comparative research study has give evident that cocoa have higher antioxidant activity than black tea, green tea, and red wine. iii. Antioxidants help to neutralize the oxygen-based free radicals that are present in the body. iv. Free radicals are associated with human disease, including cancer, atherosclerosis, Alzheimer 's disease, Parkinson 's disease and many others.
