The Freelance Photographers in Antipolo Freelance photographers used to converge at the Cathedral of Antipolo every weekend especially on Sundays just to take portraits of Sunday worshipers and tourists for a fee. The tourists and worshipers then wait for the photographers to develop and print their pictures and then come back. Usually, it only takes a few minutes for the photographer to return with a beautifully composed picture with the Cathedral as the background. For those not who do not know, Antipolo is a vibrant city 18 kilometers east of Manila, the Philippines. It is home to the Antipolo Cathedral. People love pictures with stories or stories with pictures more than pictures only. People love to be entertained more than gaze at pictures only. This is why in my opinion Facebook quickly outgrew Flickr. Flickr is for purists and photographers while Facebook is for the masses with stories to share. Going back to the question: who is killing the photographers of Antipolo? Is it the smartphone or is it the social media? A camera is now just a tool for the social media. It is now just a means to an end. Until these photographers realize that smartphones are not their enemy, they will never regain their stature. Until they learn to use social media to their advantage, they will become less relevant. Until they realize that they have to be relevant to succeed, they will fail, ultimately. As in any industry, any skill of trade and any business, it is important to keep track of metrics. Photographers felt the decline in income years ago. Some have tried to solve the problem by going digital. It was not enough.
