The fundamental elements of the information shared in the Unit 1 reading assignment is a very sound advisement for academic or professional writing under any circumstance that an individual may encounter. Utilizing Microsoft Word or a similar application, avoiding slang and similar abbreviating techniques and not supporting your opinions with a reputable source document can cause problems at multiple levels in academic or professional writing (Bethel University, ND). It is my opinion that the tips provided in the Unit 1 Read section of this course demonstrate a very common sense approach to mentoring new students and writers concerning common oversights. Attention to detail and conformance to establish methods are always important while composing
The Synopsis that I gathered from Haas and Flowers’ “Rhetorical Reading Strategies and the Construction of Meaning” was none the less another interesting read. Experienced readers might come to understand that both reading and writing can be “context-rich, situational, and have constructive acts”. Though a large number of students may find reading and writing more or less to be an exchange of valued or non-valued information. Continuing on, multiple studies that have been conducted have also found that on average 77 percent of experienced readers tend to use content strategies to expand their knowledge of the reading. These strategies usually include vigorous annotations of the reading/writing that have been shown to improve the readers/writers’ comprehension of the material.

In the article by Hass and Flower they discuss how important rhetorical reading is in the way we construct meaning. I agree with them I believe it is important to have a better understanding of what you are reading. While I am someone who is guilty of just getting through a reading to paraphrase I do sometimes struggle with reading between the lines. Something Hass and Flower mentioned that I feel is important in this article is how reading is connected with the way we write. Hass and Flower go on to say that experienced readers understand both reading and writing are context-rich, situational, constructive acts and many students see reading and writing as information exchange.(Pg426)Therefore
Reading Indicator 5.2 Think Aloud is the researched – based reading strategy I chose to use to facilitate the reading comprehension skills while reading nonfiction literature. The strategy used for 5.2, think aloud, is teachers modeling the use of text features to increase students reading comprehension of nonfiction text. Students will observe the teacher asking specific questions about the text, illustrations, charts, and other text features to understand what the text is saying at a deeper level, and retain more information about the text. Furthermore, my objective is that, students will learn how to effectively use text features as they observe the teacher modeling the process, using the reading strategy think aloud, for students while reading a text.
Nicholas Carr’s “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” is a critical analysis of the Internet’s effects on our brains’ cognition. Carr explores the impacts that reading Internet text has on how we think and absorb information, citing personal examples and examples from public settings. In his article, Carr argues that the now commonplace practice of reading online has changed how our minds think and process information; Carr believes that the more we read online, the less we will be able to “deep read”, as one would with printed text. In Elizabeth Schmar-Dobler’s “Reading on the Internet:
LISTENING: listening is the ability to receive information accurately and be able to interpret messages. Messages can be easily misunderstood by not listening effectively. Mastering the listening skill will bring about the ability to erase frustration and irritation because it helps the sender and the receiver to understand perfectly what is being communicated, good listening skills benefits individuals with the skill because it increases the number of friends in a working environment and improves the self esteem of the individual. Listening is very important because it give one the opportunity to relax and reduces blood pressure.
Furthermore, in the society or in any social circle where young learners operate, the ability to speak and to listen is crucial in the development of their total personality and eventually social horizon. Children need to speak what they need, feel, and think to be addressed, helped, and understood. Good speaking and listening skills have benefits in one’s personal life which includes wider social circles, improved self-esteem and confidence, favorable academic work and more. In addition to these, Palmer (2014) mentioned in the introduction of his book, Teaching the Core Skills of Listening and Speaking, that making students listen a lot does not automatically make them good listeners, and occasionally making them speak in front of the class does not automatically make them good speakers.
Among the four language skills, reading comprehension has always been the main concern of Iranian ESP instructors (Farhadi, 2005; Sajadi & Oghabi, 2011; Tabatabaei, 2007). In a similar vein, Iranian university students regard reading comprehension as the most important skill (Sajadi & Oghabi, 2011). Williams (1984) classifies reading materials into three categories: (1) getting general information from a text, (2) getting specific information from a text, (3) for pleasure and for interest. Harmer (2009) believes that reading has a positive effect on people’s vocabulary knowledge, on their spelling and also on their writing. Scanning, skimming, reading for general understanding, reading to learn, reading to integrate information, reading to
