On November 14, 1969, Apollo 12 launched from Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 11:22am in search for another human landing on the moon. The Module was 363 foot tall and is the second mission to land humans on the moon for the United States and is also known as the “Pinpoint” mission. The first mission in which humans walked on the moon was Apollo 11 that occurred just a few months prior. The main purpose of this mission was to bring back information and photos for future missions down the road. Apollo 12 landed on the moon on the 19th and was directly on the Ocean of Storms. One interesting thing that happened on the return from Apollo 12 was that the crew witnessed and photographed a solar eclipse. A solar eclipse is when the moon casts …show more content…
“The Apollo 12 flight plan called for the LM ascent stage to provide a measured seismic stimulus for the ASLEP seismic experiment (Dunbar 1).” This mission was the second most successful landing for the United States. During the process of reaching the moon for Apollo 12, it was Conrad and Bean that stepped out of the Command Module and on the moon's surface. Richard Gordon stayed in the module by himself. In this mission the module was called Yankee Clipper. It was the machine that had the duty of carrying the astronauts to and from the moon. “Apollo 12 landed in an area called Mare Cognitum in the Ocean of Storms. Mare Cognitum means Known Sea and was so called because several unmanned spacecrafts had recently landed in the area and it was familiar (Adams).” This mission took approximately 10 days, four hours, 36 minutes, and 25 seconds to cover 952,354 miles of distance. Over all in mission Apollo 12 Yankee Clipper had 45 revolutions to better classify the orbits. “The Apollo 12 mission was the only mission to the Moon in which the astronauts were able to visit another spacecraft. The landing was so precise that Conrad and Bean were able to walk to Surveyor 3, a spacecraft which landed there in 1967, and took parts of it to return to earth (Adams).” Mentioned earlier their goal was to return with anything useful to help with missions down the road. Fun fact about what was said when the men landed on the Moon; …show more content…
The rocket had just taken off and about 36.5 seconds in and about a mile and a half up there was a flash of white light. “As the astronauts sped through the storm about a mile and a half up, traveling faster than the speed of sound, the clouds’ electrical charge had given way. A lightning bolt, carrying up to a hundred thousand amps and a hundred million volts, had struck the capsule and passed down the metal exterior of the rocket, riding its fiery, highly ionized plume all the way to the earth (Pasternack).” The staff on earth said they had never dealt with something so odd when sending a rocket off. About sixteen seconds later the rocket ship as hit again with lightning. The rocket managed to stay on track so the mission was still a go. Although this was a low-light in the take off, the rest of the mission was handled very well. Through struggles and sudden decisions everyone worked together very well to achieve a successful mission. “If it hadn’t been for the quick thinking of John Aaron (and the recall of Bean), one of those lightning-induced failures might have thrown the entire lunar program off course, and possibly resulted in three deaths. Alongside the rescue of Apollo 13, the calm rescue of Apollo 12 was considered to be NASA’s “finest hour”

They landed in the moons ocean of storms. He explored the surface of the moon while doing multiple surface experiments. They also did the amazing feat of putting the first nuclear power generator station on the moon. This mission was to get a power source on the moon. He made the trek of 250,000 miles in order to complete this mission; it was worth it though, I mean look at those pictures taken by fellow astronaut Richard Gordon.
On November 8th, 1960, John Kennedy wins presidency against Richard Nixon. On May 25th, 1961, Kennedy proposed the moon program, the space race had begun. On July 20th, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were the first two men to land on the moon, the U.S.A had won the space race. It took them a total of three days to reach the moon's lunar orbit. Apollo 11 was launched on July 16th, 1969, and it took a total of twelve minutes to escape Earth's atmosphere.
This mission proved that direct-ascent rendezvous was possible, which was before thought to be an unrealistic method of getting off the moon. The GATV craft on this mission functioned with greater success than on previous Gemini missions, allowing NASA to test the bounds of what is possible with these low orbit manned spacecraft. Furthermore, this mission implemented equipment improvements based on previous missions, such as including handholds and developing footholds. Neutral buoyancy simulation was also implemented due to the results of the EVAs on this mission and the previous Gemini missions. In all, this mission proved the effectiveness of direct-ascent rendezvous and greatly improved the quality of spacewalks for future
They went on and launched a dog into space. Shortly after the Americans developed a space administration. The race ended when the United States landed on the moon in 1969. Neil Armstrong was the first person to be on the moon and he returned back safely, accomplishing their goal of demonstrating superiority in their
Knowing that the one problem can cause numerous others in the system, they’re forced to shut off the main power of the shuttle. After carefully aligning themselves, they’re able to land safely back on earth. The famous Apollo 13 Even though

This was the mission that landed the first humans on the moon. In just eight days, those three men became a part of one of mankinds greatest accomplishments. After this momentous event, many writers, speakers, and artists expressed in their own way, what had happened as well as their own personal thoughts and opinions on the mission. "Man Takes First Steps on the Moon" found in a special edition of The Times, focuses on informing the audience of the details and facts of the moon landing as well as
Most people take for granted that the US moon landing really did happen. Surprisingly, there are many who believe that the entire event was completely staged. In fact, if one were to google the moon landing, they would discover there are countless websites devoted to both sides of this argument. The purpose of this essay is to settle this question and provide undeniable proof that on July 20, 1969 the Apollo 11 team made history and put the first man on the moon.
On July 16 1969 Armstrong and his pilots took off to the moon. About seven hours after they landed, they opened the door and walked down the ladder before he became the first man to walk on the moon, He said “that’s one small step for man, and one giant leap for mankind “. Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin spent more than 2 hours outside the craft. They studied the surface and collected rocks, and after a day, they left and docked with Collins while he was in orbit then all three flew back.
That’s when the Apollo program was initiated, all of the missions weren’t going so well at first till Apollo 11 when Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin and Michael Collins had successfully landed on the moon (The space race,
When With only thirty seconds of fuel left, Armstrong still had to fly the Lunar Module onto a safe landing spot. The craters and mountainous terrain of the moon it was difficult to find a flat safe place to land. In these sorts of situations there are thousands of things that can go wrong and any of these could have happened, endangering the lives of the astronauts. Armstrong managed to land the Lunar Module and around six hours later he stepped onto the moon, “Buzz” Aldrin shortly after.
On July 20th, 1969, the Apollo 11 with astronaut Neil Armstrong and his crew, guided by thousands of NASA technicians, supposedly landed on the surface of the moon. It was certainly one of the most extraordinary events accomplished by mankind up to that date. Neil Armstrong’s first words upon stepping on the moon surface will always be remembered “ A small step for mankind, a giant leap for humanity”. Ever since then, this achievement has been a matter of discussion by several groups that either believed or disbelieved this.
The moon landing was one of the most iconic moments in history. Viewers stood on their toes until the very moment that Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon, and they stayed there until Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin landed on American soil again. Authors The Times, William Safire, and Ayn Rand speak on the moon landing soon after the mission was accomplished. In the morning after America successfully landed the first aircraft on the moon, The Times published an article about the moon landing.
This was the third successful lunar landing mission. Apollo 14 launched from Kennedy Space Center, FL on January 31, 1971 at 4:03pm. The crew consisted of Allan Shepard, the first American in space and as well as the oldest astronaut in space during the time of Apollo 14, Stuart A. Roosa, Edgar D. Mitchell. This was the last of “H” missions or missions consisting of moon walking and lunar vehicular events with a very precise landing point.
A year after the Apollo 8 mission the Apollo 11 space mission set off on July sixteenth and Neil Armstrong became the first man to step on the moon (“The
