Former Confederate leaders like Jefferson Davis and Alexander Stephens claimed that the Civil War was fought because of state’s rights and how they wanted to fight back against federal tyranny. After reading the Apostles of Disunion: Southern Secession Commissioners and the Causes of the Civil War, I agree that the war was fought because of state’s rights. The people in the South wanted to keep slavery and were going to do anything they could to keep slavery. They believe that the government was trying to oppress the South by making them get rid of their slaves. The South was afraid that if Abraham Lincoln was elected president that he would abolish slavery. That is not necessarily true because Abraham Lincoln had his own slaves but he just wanted to stop the spread of slavery. He did not want slavery to expand into the North or even to the new territories of the West. The South thought that Lincoln would abolish slavery and the South did not want to do that because they thought that the North would have too much power and they did not want to relinquish all of that power to the North. The slaves in the South were making their slaves owners a lot of money by working hard and not being paid for it. The South was afraid of racial equality (77). I feel like there were more problems than the book mentioned but the main problems were still there. They did not want the slaves to be free and they did not want black men to gain equal rights as white men because the white men in the South believed that black men should not be considered equal to white men. The book did a good job of showing the view of the South and that is important because you need to look at both sides of the argument before you make a
