In South, torn between the economic benefits of slavery and the moral and constitutional issues raised, and white Southerners grew more and more defensive. They argued that black people were incapable of caring for themselves. They said that slavery was a benevolent institution that kept them fed, clothed, and occupied. Most Northerners did not doubt that black people being inferior to whites, but they did doubt the benevolence of slavery. The Civil War changed the future of the United States.
“A house divided against itself cannot stand”, words from Abraham Lincoln(Doc. M). You will need to know that when President Lincoln said that quote, this “house” he talks of is the United States. You also will need to know that the North and South had different perspectives about slavery, the North did not like slavery, the South did. Anyway, the Civil War was caused by the issue of the North’s and South’s different opinions. The first reason was about economic differences.
The South longed for slavery to be accepted into the constitution, as their cash crop economy thrived on the utilization of slaves. The abolishment of slaves would impact farmers in the south that produced massive quantities of cash crops. Prior to the
Chandra Manning expresses her interpretations in What this Cruel War was Over through analyzing soldiers’ journals and letters home. Throughout the content of the book, Manning effectively establishes why each soldier fought. She clearly defines the differences each confederate, white Union and African-American Union soldier believed and how those beliefs changed throughout the war. Manning also efficiently defines the similarities with the soldiers by using the commonality of liberty and patriotism, and what those ideals meant to each solider. Manning describes the Confederate troops’ initial motive as protecting manhood, family concerns, and self interests.
The south did this in a fight to hold power over the freemen and it was effect way to prevent the freemen to gain power or move up in society. This all was in the start with black codes and work laws. The south made laws that made mirrors of the freemen to work for free under white employment. The south also enforced these through the police or law enforcement. The fact was that all law enforcement was white and which led to bitterness from them towards the freemen population.
The South also felt that all the power had gone to the north since Abraham won the election without a single vote from the south and just picture they felt like Abraham Lincoln had overcome them. That he was already claiming victory. The south were angry with Lincoln not only because he won the election without winning a SINGLE southern state, but because they felt that Abraham would immediately abolish slavery. The reason Nast could
I believe that the results of Reconstruction have been mixed and i believe that the economy is a problem that needs to be fixed. By not dictating who can have what job based on their race Reconstruction can meet its goal of creating equality for all. During Reconstruction, Americans had very different opinions about the government. In the northern states, most people believed that since the South had seceded before they had to keep an eye on them.
Many delegates from the Northern states considered slavery evil and denounced it as a repugnant institution. The South on the other hand, argued that slavery was an economic reality and necessity. As Charles Cotesworth Pinckney so aptly put it, “While there remained one acre of swamp-land uncleared of South Carolina, I would raise my voice against restricting the importation of negroes. I am . . . thoroughly convinced . . .
Even though, No one should be mistreated and hear bad things about them because of the color of their skin, in the South, segregation was really bad, blacks had no equal rights. Blacks were treated badly for trying to bring whites and blacks together. Blacks and Whites also had different laws, such as the Jim Crow Laws that made them unequal. Blacks couldn 't go where whites were but whites could go where blacks were.
This decision angered both northerners and southerners. The North was upset due to the decision, which declared that black Americans didn’t count as citizens, which made no effort in the abolition of slavery. The South’s issue was that the majority of their state population was African American, and would give them less representatives if they did not count as citizens, or people in general. This affected the election of Abraham Lincoln, which led to the South’s succession and the start of the
Southerners believed that the U.S. was made for and by the white race, and that the Africans had no part of their establishment. They believed that slaves were justified by the “..experience of mankind, and the revealed will of the almighty creator.” (Document B.) They did not want to give up their businesses or their beliefs too soon therefore, they
Thesis Statement: In South Carolina, it was common for masters to own slaves, abuse them, give them harsh living conditions, and strict rules to follow. In response to the unfair conditions, slaves had uprisings or even ran away. Abraham Lincoln, the President at the time, wanted to end slavery, so he issued the Emancipation Proclamation which stated that slaves were both free in
Liberty has the definition of the state of being free within society from oppressive restrictions imposed by authority on one’s way of life, behavior, or political views. This means the right to be free in a country. America had trouble with finding how liberty can be a part of the country. The fight for liberty was difficult to obtain because America had the break from Great Britain, needed to build a country from scratch, and come together as a country. America was not always a free country.
