In They Say/ I say, Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein informs the audience of the basic moves in academic writing through text, illustrations, and templates. Their main model in this book is they say/I say template, in which it helps writers to develop their arguments by paying attention to what others are saying, and engaging with a response. The authors goal is to demystify academic writing, and return it to its social and conversational roots. The authors want the writers to engage in the ideas of others. These concepts from this book, will help make a stronger, supportive argument.
Under the category of “Previewing the Text”, the author mentioned actions like skimming the text for a quick overview, noting boldfaced words, headings, and paying attention to incorporated lists. Whenever I am taking notes out of a textbook, especially out of a science textbook, I always perform these actions. For one, it allows for me to be comfortable with the material. However, these actions do not pertain to me just reading the text; rather, I can be an efficient author by incorporating these methods into my writing as well. If I were to ever author a piece of informational text, I would make sure to utilize the use of headings and boldfaced words, for they really stress the importance of both the overall text and some of the ideas found within
Project One For this assignment, I had to choose a scholarly or academic text from my own discipline and write an essay in which I analyze how well such text meets the needs of the rhetorical situation. I have picked a text written by Janet Brennan Croft, which is about characters and how they both evade and embrace faith. The scholarly article is called, Turin and Aragorn: Evading, and embracing fate, and I believe it does a great job at meeting the needs of the rhetorical situation. The audience of this Article is that of students and that of those who wish to understand Tolkien’s characters in more depth.
It is essential to captures the reader 's interest and this will be done by finding how to well write a thesis sentence that will want the readers to keep reading and find out more about the thesis. In “Does Texting Affect Writing?”, Cullington used voice markers to demonstrate what others had to say about texting. For the reader, the voice markers help to integrate quotes of what others stated connecting it back to the argument. This made the text run smoothly for the reader and not lose focus. “To avoid confusion in your own writing, make sure that at every point your reader can clearly tell who is saying what” (71).
I will continue to review the several strategies and techniques a writer can utilize to keep them sharp in my mind. Additionally, I will take similar courses like this one to strengthen my knowledge and writing skills. Minor Comparison and Contrast Explanation I chose to include my comparison and contrast minor paper in my writer 's log because it was the one I fully immerse myself in. I was able to express my supporting details in a comprehensible manner. Which helped me avoid creating misunderstandings that could affect the purpose of the entire paper.
Planning can help you to formulate ideas and to ensure that the structure of your final essay is logical and appropriate to the essay title. There is many different way of planning that I use such as drawing pictures, making lists, brainstorming, using graphic organizers. Planning is important because it make the writing easier when I plan what I’m going to talk about. Also in the article by Berkenkotter which she did study and experiment on Donald M. Murray to see how perfitonal academics and she found that planning is important process in Murray writing Strategy. “Some of the more provocative findings of this study concern the sub-processes of planning and revising that have not been observed in conventional protocols”.
I will go over the advantages and disadvantages of both, but to do that you either have to be both wise and intelligent or neither. I think I can pull off the latter in this essay. My essay started with some questions,to grab an attention of the reader and I appeared fair-minded and morally likable as I talked for students benefit from the beginning, using ethos. After stating an opinion about this theme, my thesis statement is proved by using indicated meanings and reasons. In a second paragraph,I used the personal emotional example and unified it with others. Counter-argument is supported by real life examples and emotional experiences,to which I found a solution to prove that everything is solvable. Finally, I wrote a conclusion in simple but persuasive words,once again to influence the reader,in this case, the students.
I believe that Intellectual Perseverance is the trait that I would say I still have an opportunity for improvement. As mentioned above, I want results and I want them now. This course i 've had to read and read some of our text to understand some of the theories that were presented. It really makes you think so at times it has been a challenging to slow down and refresh.

13th Analysis “13th”, a documentary produced by Anya DeVernay, is about racial inequality. To strengthen the argument about racial inequality, DeVernay uses pathos, logos, and ethos in the documentary. Pathos, the use of emotions, is seen numerous times in the 13th. For example, throughout the film, clips of African Americans being thrown into jail or beings harshly treated are shown. This appeals to emotions because the person viewing the film gets a real life image of what African American’s are being treated like.
Kathryn Stockett successfully uses rhetorical devices to get the reader to feel and understand the perspectives of the protagonists. Stockett uses pathos, ethos, and logos in her book, since the book about social injustice. The topics in the book range from inequality of the sexes to social classes and racism, Stockett is successful in getting the reader to reflect while reading the book and the themes of the book have a clear presence. We see Stockett use ethos and pathos in the very first chapters when we learn that Hilly doesn't like Minny and Minny doesn't want to say why at first, but the incident with Ms. Holbrook was affecting her chances of getting a job because of the influence Hilly has over this suburban society. In some instances where Stockett uses ethos, pathos is also included in her writing.
As Nelson Mandela once said, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Donovan Livingston, a graduate at Harvard Graduate School of Education, has similar views on education. His passionate and inspiring speech called “Lift Off” was given at HGSE’s Commencement Ceremony on May 25, 2016. The speech discusses the importance of education as well as the obstacles and injustices students, especially those of color, have experienced throughout history in getting an education.
