Saurabh Jain BA LLB Section-E Approaches to Social Research In this essay, I would like to talk about the nature and the process of social research as talked about by Alan Bryman and about the various challenges that are faced by social researchers undertaking the research work. It is very important to understand the social research methods because of various reasons, firstly it helps us to understand the basic concept of the research work and how when inexperienced people try to do research work they end up making very common mistakes such as vague and ambiguous questions in questionnaires and resorting to practices which are ethically wrong. These researches could be motivated by developments and the changes in society like rise in smoking levels among teenagers. Social research is generally done when the researches find some inconsistency in the studies or a gap in the literature or some issue which is not resolved. There are various factors based on which the social research and its methods operate. Like the topics which are investigated are influenced by the available theoretical position like someone studying impacts of smoking would take other theories such as lifestyle and age into account. Such social research is influenced and adds to theory. One must be familiar with the topic of the study as one may end up researching something which is already in place, then the person has to build up on that research. The researcher’s view about the nature of relationship between the theory and the research also influences it. Some researchers may begin by taking a hypothesis or a theory, while others may form a theory at the end of their study. Different people have different conceptions as to do a research. Literature review tells us how one must have a certain knowledge beforehand about the topic and research that have been carried out on it using the various methods. It also helps to link your findings to the existing literature and hence helps in increasing the credibility of your work. Concept refers to the way we make sense of a social work. Research question helps us to narrow down on the matter in hand and to focus on that. To carry out a research one must use a sample and as it is not possible to directly contact all the relevant people, thus we take certain cases to draw our conclusions. Data collection varies depending on the type of research, it could be in the form of interviews, questionnaires, etc. Data analysis refers to using statistical techniques to analyze the collected data, moreover flaws need to be checked.
