There are many archetypes in several short stories. Archetypes can be symbols that characters are represented by. Also, archetypes have the potential to be a specific role that a character fulfills. Three different archetypes are used in “The Cask of Amontillado,” “The Most Dangerous Game,” and “The Gift of the Magi.”
For instance, an archetype that is in “The Cask of Amontillado” is the trickster. The protagonist, Montresor, lures his friend, who had insulted him, into a catacomb for wine. Then, when they entered a niche, Montresor chained up his friend inside the catacomb and sealed him away behind a stone wall. Montresor left his insulting friend to die inside the sealed stone wall in the catacomb.
