Jay Mountain, Oklahoma, 1965 A local church on the top of Jay Mountain was set to flames by what appears to be a cigarette. Many children were trapped inside the burning church. Two boys by the names of Ponyboy and Johnny rushed into the fire and saved all of the kids. The investigation continues, but evidence has been uncovered that the boys are Greasers and were near the church because they were running away from possible charges of manslaughter. So now the real question is: Are Ponyboy and Johnny juvenile delinquents or heroes? Greasers Ponyboy and Johnny, the two heroes of the church fire are known as Greasers. Greasers are from the East Side of town, commonly poor, reckless, often involved in crime, gang fights, and general trouble. In self defense and trying to stop the Socs from drowning Ponyboy, Johnny pulled out his switchblade and killed Bob. The boys quickly decided to get out of town in an effort to avoid the “fuzz.” The boys say they hid away in the abandoned church for about five days when their friend and member of their gang, Dally Winston, came to help them. As they decided to turn themselves in, and walked past the church which had been their hiding place, they saw it was set afire. Johnny, acting quickly, ran into the church with Ponyboy following. The boys successfully got all the children out safe and unharmed. Unfortunately, when Ponyboy escaped the church, Johnny was still stuck inside. They stayed there for a week before Dally, one of their greaser friends, came and took them to Dairy Queen. When they drove back to the church, it was on fire and there were little kids inside. Although all those things happened the big claim is when the church was burning, Johnny went to the fire to save the kid. Ponyboy came running into the church after him. Although he didn't get hurt as badly as Johnny because Dally's jacket saved him it was very Vicious. “Suddenly, in the red glow and the haze, I remembered wondering what it was like in a burning ember, and I thought: Now I know, it's a red hell.” page… .

In the novel entitled The Outsiders, written by S.E. Hinton, fourteen year old Ponyboy Curtis is faced with the deaths of his beloved parents. Now under the care of his oldest brother Darry, Ponyboy and his other brother, Sodapop, are forced to stay out of trouble to avoid being taken away to a boys’ home. However, these brothers are members of a gang referred to as “greasers”, which poses a threat to their good reputation. Throughout the novel, Ponyboy struggles to determine whether or not it would benefit his brothers if he were to be taken away to a home. Though it is difficult for the family to live a somewhat normal life, Ponyboy deserves the opportunity to stay with his brothers.
While the three brothers wait to hear how Dally and Johnny are doing, reporters and policemen come to the hospital to talk to them. Finally, the doctor comes out to talk to them. Dally is going to spend a few days in the hospital, so they can tend to his burned arm, but then he 'll be fine. But Johnny is "in critical condition", with a broken back and "third degree burns. "Johnny might not live.
The Soc's kept harassing the boys and they knew a fight was about to happen. So, Jonny reached into back pocket to make sure he still had the switchblade they were lucky he had. Ponyboy clearly said something that the Soc's didn't like and they went after them. As a couple of the Soc's were kicking and beating Jonny, the remaining Soc's were trying to drown Ponyboy. He was struggling but managed to get loose.
These 3 people are people I consider that are very important to the book. Ponyboy is one of the people in the book that deserves to be or is a hero. Ponyboy is very courageous and helps others. One of the quotation that can support that he’s a hero is when he realized the children are in the burning church he was not afraid at all and said, “I’ll get them, don’t worry!” (p. 91)
Their actions show that Ponyboy and Johnny are heroes because they ran right into the fire to save the kids with no regard that they could get hurt. One reason that Dally is a hero is because he saved Johnny from the fire while the church was collapsing. Heroism can also be seen from Dally when he gets money, a gun, and a place to stay for Johnny and Ponyboy.
Unfortunately, they went missing right after the crime was committed. The cops were planning to search in Texas, but Johnny, Ponyboy, and Dallas Winston, 17, recently checked into the hospital. When asked what happened Ponyboy said, “We(Johnny and I) caught a train to Windrixville and stayed in an abandoned church. We left to eat, but when we came back the
Ponyboy’s parents died in a car crash leaving his oldest brother Darrel also known as Darry to take care of his two younger brothers. The middle brother Sodapop is always trying to keep Darry and Ponyboy from fighting. Darry has become more of a parent figure in in Ponyboys life causing a lot of tension between the two. Some of the other main characters are Johnny, Two-Bit, Dallas, and Steve. They are all Greasres and are coincided a gang but just think of each other as friends.
The character Johnny grows in major ways throughout The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. Johnny was a greaser, His best friend was Ponyboy, the main character. Johnny was a dynamic character, he contributed a lot to the main theme. Johnny had bad parents and committed murder. Soon after his bad acts, he became a hero.
After that, Ponyboy finds himself in a situation that he personally can’t back out of. It’s the fire at the church. Ponyboy, starts running in to help save the children, but when he turns around, he sees Johnny. “Hey Ponyboy,” Johnny says. Johnny was following Ponyboy into the fire to help save the kids.
