Tensions rose across the country from those in support support of slavery and those opposed. Many states wanted to outlaw slavery while others adamantly defended it because it was the main institution with a high and consistent revenue. Ultimately, the disagreements over slavery are what lead to the Civil War. The country divided into an “Us versus Them” situation which lead to both sides having growing support for their views and making the groups less susceptible to an agreement. In 1862, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation which freed slaves from confederate states.

Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass had opposite thought about human equality and slavery but as the time passed by, they both became clearer and found that they are supporting same thing but differently.
Isaiah Feliciano To overcome a challenge, leaders may make and deliver speeches to encourage people to work together. A common and major issue is the divisions among the populace. The three speeches, “The Gettysburg Address”, by Abraham Lincoln, “Robert Kennedy’s Remarks on the Assassination of Martin Luther King,Jr.”, by Robert Kennedy, and “Coach Boone’s Speech at Gettysburg”, by Coach Boone, attempt to encourage people overcome the challenge of disunification. One example of these leaders is during the American Civil War. President Abraham Lincoln made a speech after one of the bloodiest battles in the war, Gettysburg.
Lincoln’s political religion grounds itself in the American principle of equality. His political religion was necessary to bind the nation together in a time of dire need. The nation stood divided. One side believed it was their natural right to reap the fruits of another man’s labor, which denied his natural rights as well as his humanity, while the other side disagreed, affirming the humanity of the slaves and remained free. Lincoln pushed to change public sentiment in regard to slavery.
Progress is something everyone has to struggle and fought it through. Without progress and struggles, people wouldn't know how to make something better. Frederick Douglass once said that “If there’s no struggle, there’s no progress.” The struggle can be a physical struggle or a moral struggle, and any of them would work.

The Emancipation Proclamation is one of the most well known speeches in US history, due to its influence on the views of African American slaves. However Lincoln, the president at the time, originally did not have a side to the argument of the equal treatment of the African American race. This view would soon start to slowly change with the start of the Civil War. With the coming of the civil war, the Union needed soldiers due to the fact that they were losing many battles, and the African American males were one of the only choices. The other reason would be that allowing slaves to be free in the North would cause a revolt from those that were enslaved in the south.
