In Antigone by Sophocles, the main character, whom the play is named for, is faced with a difficult situation. Both Antigone's brothers, Eteocles and Polyneices, have died. Eteocles died defending Thebes and Polyneices died attacking it. King Creon, Antigone's uncle, forbade the burial of Polyneices because of his attack on Thebes. The King poclaimed an edict to refuse the burial of Polyneices on pain of death.
One of Antigone 's tragic flaws is being loyal to the gods and her disloyalty to Creon. At the beginning of the play, Creon puts out an order that Polyneices, Antigone 's brother, may not be buried because he was a traitor. Antigone is not going to put up with this, she is going to honor the gods and give her brother, Polyneices, and rightful burial, even if it means being executed for her doing. Antigone 's determination to honor the gods and her brother is one of her tragic
Conscience is an inner feeling or voice viewed as acting as a guide to the rightness or wrongness of one's behavior. Society is the the aggregate of people living together in a more or less ordered community. It’s your own decision if you want to follow your heart or the people around you. In the play “Antigone” by Sophocles, the question of whether loyalties to family or loyalties to authority are more significant is brought up when personal matters are intertwined with legal affairs. Antigone is persecuted and punished severely by King Creon because she buried her brother, Polyneices, whom the king believes to be a traitor to the city and outlawed any burials or honor for the fallen man. In this situation, Antigone is right in going against the king’s law because in burying her dear brother, she honors the promise she made to him before he died, she pays respect to the laws of God and not the laws of mere mortals, and she shows her commitment to family by displaying her unwavering loyalty towards them, even in death. Antigone is right in crusading against Creon because in essence, he is unjustly punishing her in trying to punish her brother, Polyneices.
Sophocles’ Antigone takes place in the Ancient Greek polis Thebes in which women were expected to be entirely obedient to men. Before the start of the play, the characters Etocles and Polynices kill each other in a struggle for control of Thebes, and the new king Creon deems Polynices a traitor to the city and creates an edict banning his burial. The play begins when the sister of Polynices, Antigone, attempts to convince her sister Ismene to help her bury their brother anyway, but she refuses to break the law. Unfortunately, Antigone is caught in the act and Creon is excessively stubborn about not setting her free. Throughout Antigone, Creon is impacted by gender roles more than any other character because he wants to maintain authority and feels that he would be mortified if he lost to a female.
The seek for justice is never ending. It may be delayed, denied, or postponed, however, the search is timeless. To be just is to argue for fair rights for all. It is to be someone and bring something that will help the surrounding people of the world. However, many times justice is not sought and not given to those who need it most.
Aristophanes and Sophocles both wrote similar arts that have been studied over the years. Antigone by Sophocles and Lysistrata by Aristophanes are two works of art that have many differences but they both assess an important point at the end. Out of all the differences between both of these plays, the one I consider most important is how each play ends according to the type of style it is. Even though the main characters of both of these plays were women, in Lysistrata, both the women and (eventually at the end) the men praise her for her beliefs, while in Antigone, almost everyone goes against what she feels is right which results in her death. The reason why this difference between Antigone (tragedy) and Lysistrata (comedy) is most important
How do we determine right from wrong? Determining right from wrong is interpreted differently for everyone, but often people have to choose what they believe is right and what the authority has to say in it. In the Colin Kaepernick article he makes a decision that he thinks is right and faces the consequences that were involved. In Antigone, she goes against the law to protect her brother despite what her uncle says, along with the punishment she receives. In the student protest article, the students go against the rules to show they have the right to wear what they want.

Antigone disrespects the law and buries her brother. Respect is forced and earned in Antigone and the three articles. Respect is forced and earned in Antigone and the three articles.
Dylan Madden Word Count: 508 Sophocles’ Antigone Response 6 September 2017 Before her story, Antigone’s brother Polynices, who led the armies of Argos to an unsuccessful attack which killed him and her other brother Eteocles, was considered a traitor by the new king of Thebes, Creon. Because of his actions, Creon didn’t want to bury his body however, Polynices sister Antigone saw his unburied corpse to be an offense not only to the gods but the fact that her brother to not be buried led her into doing what was right to her by burying her brother herself. Unlike Antigone, her sister Ismene was a woman who tried to be safe, to talk Antigone out of her plan.
