Free will is the power of acting without the constraint of necessity or fate; the ability to act at one's own discretion. In Paul Iori’s last essay, “Are We Human or Are We Dancer?” he stated that what makes us human is the ability of free will. Without free will people are puppets moping through life without any joy, happiness, or euphoria in life. But, with free will we can do whatever we want whenever we want. That seems a bit animalistic. We can choose to steal and murder if we truly desire to. The only was to be truly human is to live with free will, but with the strain that society puts on us. Without the constraints that society puts on us we would act like cavemen and go back to our most primal instincts, which is inhumane.

Gods have free will, but they are not human because of the all the power they have that the average person simply does not have. In the “Odyssey”, Calypso keeps Odysseus on her island for seven years. She is lonely and uses Odysseus as a toy to “play” with. In his previous essay he stated, “We do have free will and that’s what makes us human”(Iori 3). Calypso was not controlled by anyone to keep Odysseus on her island for seven years. She freely chose to keep Odysseus there because that is what she wanted. She kept him there to use him for herself. Even though she had this free will, she is not human. She kept a man from his wife and family for seven years. Odysseus has not seen his family for more than ten years, and yet she keeps him on the island for her own amusement. That is not human; no one in his or her right mind would make that decision. She was selfish with her actions. To be human also requires sacrifice. People sacrifice themselves, to help others out. There is a reason why people help a stranger with carrying their bags even if it takes them five to ten minutes out of their lives to help them or why people donate hundreds and thousands of people in need even if they do not even know them. People help other people out not because it is the most convenient thing to do, but because it is deemed by society as the right thing to do. People do an …show more content…
Children have free will and even though they are young humans, they have very inhuman characteristics. They are very imaginative, but do not use their senses past utilitarian needs and they do not have a filter while talking. People can say that children are the most human. They have not been affected by society yet. They live in their own little worlds and are very innocent and naïve. They have no influences upon which can be construed as the most human you can possibly be because you are living primarily off instinct. But, this is actually inhuman. It is interesting when you see a child play, they are very imaginative, but they often play “work” or “house”. They want to be adults even though they are many years from working and having a family of their own. Children try to disassociate themselves from the inhumanness of being a child by trying to act like an adult. Their play and imagination, which only children do, is becoming an adult and becoming part of a society and trying to escape their own little worlds that they have been living in for the past couple years. Children also have no filter. They can go around making fun of anyone they want without thinking they ever made a mistake. This is very inhuman. If a person went around their whole lives going around making fun of people; they would most likely not be accepted by society. The constraints of society develop and mold children into fully functioning humans. They do not go
Free will is an expression used to describe a person perfectly capable of making his or her own decisions without the influences of antecedent conditions (notes, free will). In other words, Cresco did not have to lead the young man into the alley way and he did not have to stab him repeatedly because it was in his complete control if he did or did not. He acted freely. Many people believe in free will because not to believe in free will questions the very essence of the human being—questions whether a person as a self even
In Ender’s Game, the theme of “adults having strange attitudes toward children” is quite prevalent in a multitude of differing ways from drastic underestimation to overt pressurization. This theme is strongly perpetuated throughout the book especially with how the Battle / Command school handle children that most are pre-pubescent and are being charged with soon leading full armies. This theme is a consistently perpetuated one not only in cinema & literature, but in daily living. Children are very much capable of adult things to potentially scary proportions, either physically or mentally but that mentality does greatly differ. A lot of these under/overestimation notions result from thinking of children as a “hivemind” rather than as individual,
Throughout the book, the longer Odysseus is on the sea, the more struggles he has which increases his desire to be home which is explanatory considering how long he’s been away from his family and home. The longer Odysseus was at sea, the more desire he obtained for his wife and his home. Through the Sirens, the cyclops, Poseidon and Zeus trying to punish him, and many other islands that Odysseus journeyed through, it was all a test of his desire and events that taught him about himself that lead to the eventual reunion with
Child psychology, also called child development, is the study of the psychological processes of children and especially, how they develop as young adults and how they differ from one child to the next. It basically tends to map onto children’s physical, cognitive and social/emotional development. Psychologists attempt to make sense of every aspect of child development, including how children learn, think, interact and respond emotionally to people around them and understand emotions and their developing personalities, temperaments and skills. It also includes how individual, social and cultural factors may influence their development. Child study is of comparatively recent origin.
According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary free will is "the ability to choose how to act. " The freedom to choose what you want to do with your life, and the ability to have control over your own actions. Without free will you limit people's abilities to grow and to evolve, you limit innovation and development, but most of all you limit people's opportunity to have happiness and a purpose. In The Giver people in the communities were told what to do in every step of their lives, they were not only deprived of free will, but the emotions, thoughts, and actions that make life so wonderful.
God’s and Goddesses vs. Humans In times of difficulty who we choose to blame says a lot about our own disposition--whether we choose to blame ourselves for our own actions, or we choose to blame a higher force for putting us in difficult situations. In the classic tale “The Odyssey” by ancient Greek poet, Homer we see a lot of similar situations to this when the main character, Odysseus, is put in various difficult circumstances because of the Gods. After the Trojan war ends, it takes Odysseus 10 years to get back to his home partly because the Gods put up numerous obstacles in order to make his journey home prolonged and gruesome. Although the Gods were partly at fault for his journey being long and difficult they never controlled Odysseus, therefore what happened to Odysseus was ultimately because of his own actions.
Autonomy vs shame and doubt, children from the ages of 1- 3 years are able to comprehend more about their self-image and self-control. Children can also control their body functions by completing certain assignments which gives them the feeling of freedom and self-governance. In Erikson’s third stage of his theory children can understand the difference between what is wrong and right in a social environment. However, children are very easily affected by their errors, and they are not able to see the extent of their actions. As indicated by Erikson 's 4th stage of psychosocial development, children in their middle school years start to perform more convoluted duties and see more perplexing thoughts at this stage.
“I believe the freedom to choose my course in life but I do not believe I am free to choose the consequences of my
Odysseus was on the island for many years until Calypso gets a message from the gods saying Odysseus needs to go home and he needs supplies to for his journey home. Calypso doesn’t agree that Odysseus should leave but wants the best for him so she decides that for the best he will be free even if she truly loves him she will help him and let him be free. Calypso lets him free she helps Odyssey by supplying him with food and items for him to survive. “Calypso helps him build a new boat and stocks it with provisions from her island.”
When it is time for Odysseus to leave, he does so ready and willing to face whatever future troubles that are yet to come. She serves as his protector when he needs it
The author tells us that Calypso held him captive for seven years amid hopes that he will always stay there forever and become her husband. The emotions between the two became so high and knowing very well that Odysseus could not resist the goddess, hence he was bound to fail in his mission to get back home. It took the intervention of Zeus to ensure that he embarks on his mission to get back home. Calypso’s emotion evidently go overboard when she plans to keep him captive against his will even though she genuinely cares for him as she provides shelter and feeds him very well. This is according to Sir Hugh Lloyd-Jones a scholar and a professor at Oxford
There is no doubt that Victor Frankenstein is one of the most controversial characters in literature, yet the creature he creates is the one who really the steals the attention in one of the most recognized books of all time, by creating a controversy of his own. While some readers may sympathize him because he, like a child being left by their parent, was abandoned by his creator, some may also despise him for killing William, a mere child. Of course, either of these opinion could be proven true based on the evidence that may be found in the book, however, no what stance is taken, it does not change the fact that the creature is indeed human. .Humans make mistakes, feel, and need to cared for, just like the creature, despite his appearance.
In order for free will free will to be tangible, an individual would have to have control over his or her actions regardless of any external factors. It can be argued that the inevitability of
Humanity is completely free, or as Sartre would say, humanity is “condemned to be free”. We always have a choice, and through these choices we can create for ourselves a meaning.
Jean-Paul Sartre says we are condemned to be free. Along those same lines, he also states, "Man is nothing else but what he makes of himself. " Sartre's words state exactly what he means: we are completely responsible for who we are. Ultimately, according to Sartre, every choice, action, victory, and mistake is our own doing. Sartre's philosophy unchains humanity from the unknown and shackles us to our own flawed existence.
