The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is a federal law enacted in 1990 and reauthorized in 1997 and 2004. It is designed to protect the rights of students with disabilities by ensuring that everyone receives a free appropriate public education (FAPE), regardless of ability. Furthermore, IDEA strives not only to grant equal access to students with disabilities, but also to provide additional special education services and procedural safeguards. Special education services are individualized to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities and are provided in the least restrictive environment. Special education may include individual or small group instruction, curriculum or teaching modifications, assistive technology,
The article “Reflections on the Latimer Case: The Rationale for a Disability Rights Lens” written by Yvonne Peters analyses the murder of Tracy Latimer by her father, Robert Latimer. A summary of the historical context and implications of the rights of disabled people and how they impact the Latimer case is discussed, as well as an analysis of the author’s claims. Additionally, a critique of Peters’ disability rights approach to the Latimer case will be offered. Also, Peter’s arguments will be assessed to determine if any counter arguments can be made opposing her position.

Reason for Assessment: Joe was referred for an Assistive Technology Assessment due to parent request as part of the special education services. His mother reports concerns for Joe’s organization. Joe has a history of academic difficulties due to attention related challenges. Joe is considered eligible for special education services under the eligibility criteria for Other Health Impaired (OHI). This is due to characteristics of an Attention Deficit Disorder that manifests itself in a heightened alertness to environmental stimuli that results in a limited alertness to the educational environment, which is adversely affecting Joe's educational performance.

1.1 Describe the causes and effects of complex disabilities and conditions. Mental health issues ranging from the doubts and uncertainties have become a part of daily routine, towards serious long term situation which can be very complex for managing and having a diversifying impact on the overall live of the people. The usual child health leads to contribute towards overall development (Watson & Le Couteur, 2011). Therefore it is important to take special care of people with complex disability as they turn out to be sensitive enough about the situation and environment they are living in.
Part C - Disability affects development and learning because disability affects children's development in different ways. That can be physically and sensory, social, emotional and behavioural and learning or cognitive. So say a child with Hearing impairment affects language and communication in that they may struggle to understand words in a book and get stressed at trying to read aloud.
My community placement is at Brampton Caledon Community Living. The community is mostly for adults and people with intellectual and physical disabilities. It works to support and empower all people in the area and it works alongside the community and families in the community. Most of the people that attend the program are adults that live with either their parent(s) or a family member (low income) in Bolton. To help reach out to and accommodate to families with lower income, the center charges a small fee for the adult to attend.
In this report I will discuss both the Social and Medical Models, define their pros and cons and give a short reflection on my own opinion of the two models in everyday use today. Both the medical and the social models of disability describe how they see disability and how they feel disabilities and those suffering should be treated. Both models have very different views on the causes of, how disabilities should be taken care of and by whom and both have their strengths and weaknesses when it comes to caring for those with disabilities. The article, IDEO’s Culture of Helping, states that their staff were assessed based on three characteristics, competence, trust, and accessibility, but both trust and accessibility to be by far the most important (Amabile, Fisher & Pillemer 2014). I would argue that personally my competence has also been stifled in professional environments due to me holding myself back from speaking freely due to potential feelings of judgement by others. Pfeffer defines this phenomenon as ‘self-handicapping’ in saying; People are often their own worst enemies, and not just in the arena of power. This is the case in part because people like to maintain a positive self-image. Paradoxically, one of the chief ways people preserve their self-esteem is by putting
We tend to manage our identity when interacting with various groups by changing up our identity depending on the group we are going to be around. What I mean by “changing up” is by doing what we know our identity is known for within the group we are around. You would only use certain language around this group of people for example, the slang they use. If you were to go and use the slang that you would only use around this certain group then when you go to another group they would not be able to understand your language. For example, the type of language that I would use around my teachers or someone that is higher authority over me is a different kind of language I would use around my friends.
