For the past few years, Finland has been the undisputed leader of education system according to several reports. They are renowned for employing highly skilled teachers, a curriculum that gives the least workload to students, and less emphasis on tests. The approach that seemingly contradicts the general pedagogy has proven to be the most productive, highly effective, education system. Finland has created a new and innovative approach to education that set an example for other countries to follow.

Hammond states in her article “In a Finnish classroom, it is rare to see a teacher standing at the front of a classroom lecturing students for 50 minutes.” Instead, they move around and get close to the students, helping them solve problems or answering their questions. Getting to know every student in the class is made easier for teachers because they teach in small class that consists of 20 students. Small class structure is designed to help teachers to be more aware of how their students are progressing and help those that are having difficulties in understanding the learning materials. Independence in this context does not apply only to the education system, but seems to be a culture that the Finnish values. The British head of Helsinki's international school, Peter Welch, states “Independence is very important here [in Finland], as is the concept of leaving people alone to get on with it.” By being independent, the students will be responsible of their own learning, and will be motivated to learn even without applying any goals or standard in the form of test results.
