Homework has many advantages for students, but when there is an unreasonable amount to get done homework is not helping anyone. Excessive amounts of work had led to a stressed and drained student population. Many studies have shown that in America, homework does not advance academic achievement in students. Yes, homework can be used effectively, but if it was severely reduced , the issue in place would not be that bad. With that being said, it would be much easier for students to maintain a healthy outside of school life. The level of work outside of school has seen to increase, leading to the negative effects outweighing any benefits. School board members need to open their eyes and see the issue in place. A good night sleep is critical for a students. Without it, it will be hard to focus throughout the day and it will be difficult to pay attention. According to research, “Sleep deprivation affects a whole range of mental activities, including the ability to pay attention, verbal creativity, abstract thinking, decision making, retrieval of long-term memories, and overall mood and motivation” (Ponte). With a good night sleep people are able to process things better and over all have more motivation. This sounds great, but with the amount of homework students are receiving, the recommended eight hours is just unreasonable. According to the National Sleep Foundation, “Children from 5 to 12 years old need between 10 and 11 hours of sleep each night. Teenagers need from 8.5 to 9.25 hours . But when teens get overwhelmed with schoolwork, sleep is one of the first things to go. Studies show that only 20 percent of adolescents between the ages of 11 and 17 get the recommended amount of sleep. On school nights, nearly half of them sleep fewer than eight hours” (Ponte). When teens are getting an excessive amount of work to compete by the next day, they are more worried about getting credit for doing it than actually trying. With this attitude, grades will be sinking left and right. A father of a thirteen year old students claims that his daughter only gets six and a half hours of sleep per night. Parents are trying to bring this subject to the attention of schools so something can be done about it. “In recent years, parents have voiced worries that their children are being overworked, and newspaper and magazine articles have highlighted stories of students working late on homework, even after participation in other extracurricular activities like organized sports, volunteering, and music lessons” (Is Homework Beneficial). Few elementary and middle school students are able to manage the planning required with considerable help from a parent. Many experts question if children are even getting a real childhood. This leaves no time for go out a play a game of catch or even just watch a movie with friends (Is Homework Beneficial). Another example, “When Isabel Hill speaks of her daughter 's struggles with homework, it is notable that she often speaks about the work as if it is her own: "the last two [weekends], we 've been working from dawn until dusk” (Ponte). In the article, Excessive Homework Strains Family Life, mother Isabel Hill talks about how her and her daughter are always taking up late to finish homework and projects. This happened even on the weekends. With that being said students just like Isabel 's daughter are getting no time to do other things besides school work (Ponte). Many parents work full time jobs and do not want to come home and have more things to do on their plate.
Enough sleep can make students well-rested and focus on their goals ahead of
It shows a girl with a lot of homework in front of her with her hands on her head. Her mother was next to her but also seemed frustrated and looked away, probably not being much of help. This showed me the stress that homework can cause for children and the amount that is being given to them. It is obviously hard for youth to do work by themselves without a professor to assist them and it seems to also be time consuming. This picture did not give me a lot of detail on how to fix homeschooling but what it did show me is that homework should be minimized because it is a hassle for kids and they often do not find help from whoever they may find in their
Down with Homework I agree with Alfie Kohn, when he states the strain that enormous amount of homework causes. But I disagree with his opinion in completely eliminating homework. We cannot eliminate homework because that will destroy the bridge that keeps students connected to their books after they leave school. I do however agree with Kohn in the recent, increase in homework children are getting.
Why Students Shouldn’t Have Homework There are around 365 days in a year, and in a school year, there are around 180 days. From the beginning of the school year to the end, the most common thing that students least like, is homework. Coming home after a long day of school, then having responsibilities to do at home, not to mention some students have after school activities which take up around 2 hours if not more. Homework for students is a barrier that makes it difficult for them to have any kind of social life, or spend time with their family. There are many reasons why students shouldn’t have homework, during this essay people will learn why having homework isn’t helping the student, except making things more difficult for them.
It adds on to those seven hours students spend confined in school. Teachers often spend hours grading papers and projects. The question is, why then do they give homework? Doesn’t it limit their time with family too? Don’t they have other responsibilities outside of school?
Therefore, because students spend a maximum of eight hours at school, they should be expected to spend their free time doing homework. In the article titled Why Parents Should Not Make Kids do Homework, the author says, “young students can rarely cope with complex time management skills or the strong emotions that
Sounds like an ideal afternoon right? If only all schools never gave homework. Homework is used in a lot of countries and in others there isn’t any. Some people believe it helps improve grades and scores. Others think kids should not have homework because it doesn’t help them and use standardized tests to support them.
Homework is like a boat with a hole in its side if there is a leak in the boat then the boat is useless. The water will rush in and fill the boat with cold, dark water. The same goes for homework, it is useless. All the nights kids spend with hours and hours of homework, all the tears and stress are not helping kids in school. Numerous amounts of today's kids have excessive amounts of homework.
Students tend to stay up for homework due to the fact that they usually don 't’ have enough time. Not getting enough sleep will increase the development of poor health making students incapable of learning. “Some of the most serious potential problems associated with chronic sleep deprivation are high blood pressure, diabetes, heart attack, heart failure or stroke. Other potential problems include obesity, depression and lower sex drive” (Brain Team and Spine). Just by that, homework can ruin personal lives by taking what students need like enough sleep.
The clock strikes 12:00 am and students are trying to finish their pile of homework due in the morning. Students are rushing to finish in order to get ready for the next day. Schools are assigning students a lot of homework, but the homework can do more harm than good. Negatively affect kids by sleep deprivation. Source of frustration and daily stress.
Homework. It’s arguably the thing children dread the most. Children go to school for eight hours a day and then are expected to come home and do school work. Kids hate it, and parents hate arguing with their children to do their homework, but is it really all bad? James Atwater is of the opinion that homework should be banned.
Is homework becoming too much? Every day students spend hours upon hours doing homework every night and stressing out if they aren't able to finish it. The first form of homework was given as a punishment to the kids that would act up in class. The teacher would give them extra school work to take home and do instead of being able to go home relax and have fun.
Parents would agree that their children find the homework they do stressful due to the extensive amounts given which tires them
Homework is an on-going topic of debate that has been being questioned for decades. In my opinion, I don’t think that homework is essential to students due to the effect it has on your mental and eventually your physical health and it is starting to affect their school life. Is the amount of work we get actually helpful to students? Is it too much for students? How is homework affecting my child?
Everyone goes to school, everyone has homework. Homework has been a topic of interest for a very long time. Many students think that homework is not beneficial. However, without homework people wouldn’t remember what they learned in class. Homework gives kids the chance to prove what they have learned.
