As students grow they have less and less free time to the point that recess is taken out of the equation, but is this the best thing to do? “Is recess necessary in school,” a question that many individuals ask themselves when it comes to recess. Some believe that recess should be completely removed from school, while others believe that recess should be part of school. Bullying can thrive in recess, but recess is necessary as students can gain an improved memory, attention, and concentration all while behaving better in class. Recess has many wonderful benefits for students and teachers alike. For instance, recess can benefit students as it allows them to have better attention, memory and concentration. In an article by the CDC, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, it is stated that “Recess benefits students by improving their memory, attention, and concentration.” While a survey conducted in 2018 by Voice of play supports this fact due to them surveying teachers in the U.S, and 100 percent of them agreed that recess is essential for students' mental and physical development. In “Recess,”an article by the CDC, it is stated that recess is “helping them stay on task in the classroom.” To support this fact Voice of Play’s survey also asked teachers if recess helped students who tend to behave badly to which 97 percent of teachers agreed. Recess allows for students to run around and relieve stress all while using up excess energy, which if not released during recess could amount to students misbehaving in class. This will ultimately disrupt the classroom environment for not only the student but for his or her peers as well. Therefore recess allows for students to behave and pay attention in class.
