Many of the concerns of the ethicality of animal experimentation is understood by the people who still believe animal testing is necessary. Many regulations are enforced on animal studies in an attempt to make them as moral as possible. Additionally, there are also campaigns that advocate the regulation on animal testing “ which advocates the search (1) for the replacement of animals with non-living models; (2) reduction in the use of animals; and (3) refinement of animal use practices “ (Hajar 7). They understand the upset at the idea of animal testing, and they want to appease the masses by keeping the testing as humane as it can possibly be. Even with all of the outcry, there is a large group of people that see animal experimentation as a necessary evil.
The lives saved may outweigh the lives lost but it does not mean we can overlook the pain and suffering caused to these animals to get to the treatments and vaccines. People who feel that they can’t allow animal testing for any reason can choose to refuse treatments that have been created through animal tests. However, this means refusing almost all treatments that have been created. Technology is advancing every day and maybe one day, hopefully soon, animals will be replaced by machines and no longer need to suffer. Animal testing may not always be the most sound or successful way to find the answers but right now there is sometimes no other option.
For example, book evidence says that“Animals are locked in labs and are treated inhumanely. They are also being injected with vaccines and medicines that could be toxic to their bodies, also along with the fact that their petrified in the lab. Unfortunately, despite all the protests against animal testing, scientists will not stop. Some animals in labs have died from dehydration, starvation, and worse.” More book evidence states that “In the most extreme cases, activists broke into labs and destroyed equipment” These poor animals are being abused and beaten because of testing. If you support animal testing, you're supporting the torture of thousands and thousands of animals such as dogs, cats, rabbits and more.
For example, author Ian Murnaghan says that, “Animal testing is held particularly important for its contribution to the development of insulin, antibiotics, vaccines and drugs with high mortality rates such as cancer.” (Murnaghan) This means that, animal testing is important to cancer research. Also it means that that the development for antibiotics and other medicines need animal testing. Cancer patients need antibiotics to treat their cancer. A lot of medicines that saved people were tested on animals before hand. Also vaccines for animals would not be around if we could not test on animals.
This cycle goes on and on. Yeah, you could say that in the last 100 years or so, many medical breakthroughs have happened because of animal testing. Well, the reason for that was because of the animals. Without animals we would have this and if you imagine what the animals had to go through to get where we are today, is just horrifying. Studies have shown that “According to Humane Society International, animals used in experiments are commonly subjected to force feeding, forced inhalation, food and water deprivation, prolonged periods of physical restraint, the
Because, we, the public, are mostly blinded by cover ups and lies that make animal testing seem like it's not a really bad thing, which is why I think it is important to know all the facts and why I think it should be banned forever. As stated in Humane Society International, the term animal testing “refers to procedures performed on living animals for purposes of research into basic biology and diseases, assessing the effectiveness of new medicinal products, and testing the human health and environmental safety of consumer and industry products such as cosmetics, household cleaners, food additives, pharmaceuticals and industrial/agro-chemicals.” Statistics reveal that, each year millions of animals such as dogs, cats, rats, mice, ferrets, hamsters and monkeys experience physical and mental torture due to scientific practices. This poor animals, every year, are dissected, infected, injected, gassed, burned and blinded in hidden laboratories all over the world, most of the time without anesthetic or pain killers. If they are not killed by the testing, the animals are brutally killed. Do you know what they do to these poor dead animals?
Animal experiments are conducted to test whether the manufactured drugs, that are going to be put out in the market, are safe. They are also conducted as research purposes, like discovering cures for untreatable diseases. However, animal testing has been called in to question because its cruelty and lack of promised results. Is it possible to assume animal testing has become unnecessary? First of all, the conduction of animal experimentation can be easily rejected because of the immorality and cruelty that comes with it.
With today’s day and age, people have so many different and better options than animal testing. According to www.onegreenplanet.org, “clinical observation, clinical research, in vitro research with human tissue, autopsies, computer modeling, technology, human drug surveillance, epidemiology, pathology, preventive medicine ” are some ways that are an alternative to animal testing. The claim is supported by this piece of evidence, because it lists other methods besides animal testing to test new medicines and cures. Although some of these methods may be expensive, at least animals won’t get hurt. Some people may believe testing on similar working body system is a better way of getting results.
During animal testing, many animals are killed after experimenting on them and the others remain alive with injuries and in captivity. 95% of the animals tested are not protected by Animal Welfare Act including mice, fish and birds and they are all suffering abuse and mistreatment. Even with the protection provided by the Animal Welfare Act, some horrific cases of animal abuse in the laboratories wasn’t prevented. Some people also find it immoral to test and experiment on animals for the human benefit saying that animals do feel and suffer like humans and so it is unfair to experiment on them what cannot be experimented on humans only because they do not have the ability to express their feelings. However, animal rights supporters do not oppose the farmers who kill animals daily for food but call the scientists cruel for killing animals for the advancement of medical field although, 99% of animals killed are by farmers while only 1% are by scientists (Ian, Should Animals Be Used for Scientific or Commercial
This would leave to the unpredictable side effect and long unknowing research”. (Dave, Anderson) Another reason why animal testing is good rather than an alternative is that the alternative is humans. The alternative use of human research is a costly and has unforeseeable effects. The use of humans on approved products pose huge risk levels to all human volunteers. However, animal testing offers an essential first test level that does not pose a threat to humans.
