Gender Equality Gender equality, the word we often hear in societies nowadays. It is achieved when women and men received equality in all specs of life. A country without gender equality could not operate at its fully just because half of the population could not do what the other half could.
Small lies that we subconsciously tell ourselves mean nothing in the grand scheme of things, but if we tell ourselves small fibs on a regular bases over small and miniscule problems, what’s to stop us from saying bigger lies when bigger issues arise? One of the biggest issues, gender discrimination, must be abolished since women struggle with the gender pay gap, and unfair treatment in sports, while men struggle with the gender discrimination in divorce cases, mostimes leaving their gender as the main reason the mother receives custody over the child or children. Women may be able to participate in the same profession as men, but the large gap in pay between genders fails to attribute to the positives of said situation. The members of the Institute for Women 's Policy Research have used statistics over the past hundred years to conclude that: “Hispanic women will have to wait until 2233 and Black women will wait until 2124 for equal pay” (Pay Equity). The IWPR states that, “According to our research, if change continues at the same slow pace as it has done for the past fifty years, it will take 44 years—or until 2059—for women to finally reach pay parity.” The same institute claims that the time span will stretch from a 41 - 215 year wait for equal pay.
Gender equality has been being achieved in various aspect of the society, particularly in employment. Kofii Annan who is the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nation stated that ‘Gender equality is more than a goal in itself. It is a precondition for meeting the challenge of reducing poverty, promoting sustainable development and building good governance”, said . The term Gender Equality refers to the equal opportunities to live and to engage into different activities between men and women without being discriminated. In the past, there is no doubt that women were being treated unfairly and live as an inferior to men who count themselves as a superior.
Discrimination against women at work is still a reality and more in rich countries. Women must work almost 80 days more than a man so they can possibly earn the same, and still don’t have the same salary. It’s probably one of the worst problems that women are facing right now. Ironically, in XXI century the problem persists and it is even worse. While a lot of education is a useful tool for increasing earnings, it is not effective against the gender pay gap.
Women have an even harder job balancing household obligations and a job. Men place the stereotypical duty of women to stay at home and not work, or work and not have any kids. It is the 21st century and there should be an equal obligation of both the husband and wife to take on the household opportunities. This reduces seniority and job-specific skills and discourages employers from investing in female employees, who may not stay long enough for such investments to pay off.” Also, women prefer to be employed in flexible jobs that have more benefits than higher wages, which are usually found in non-profit sectors of an economy. Besides, men take up jobs that involve more physical risk and danger in exchange for a higher wage. According to the American Association of University Women reports, men are 4 times more likely to negotiate and bargain when it comes to wages in a new job than women. Additionally, in sports, many argue that men deserve to be paid more than women despite both male and female doing the same job, i.e.
An example of this conflict occurs when Mabel’s brothers barrage her with questions about where she intends to go and what they believe to be best for her. The ideas for what Mabel could do are very limited to not much more than becoming a nurse or a maid (Lawrence 453-455). This is an example of man vs. society conflict because the options for what a woman could do are very restricted during this time. For Mabel, none of the suggestions made by her brothers really interests her, and she doesn’t give much attention to them. Members of the community are not allowed to make decisions of their own, weather it being their choice of spouse or job.
