William Shakespeare is universally considered as the greatest playwright in the English language. Coincidentally, it is heavily debated whether he is the actual “Shakespeare.” Doubts about the authorship of Shakespeare’s works were first speculated in the late 18th century by Reverend James Wilmot, who claimed that he was distraught by the lack of local references in Shakespeare’s works (Rubenstein 74). Since the 19th century, the doubts have increased rapidly and result in the Shakespearean controversy. Arguments against Shakespeare’s authorship are based on conjecture because there are not enough facts to argue that he is not the author. His language and characterization are consistent with a single author, his genius does not rely on education, and the argument that he is not educated is simply invalid. Those who would argue that Shakespeare is not the author are basing their arguments on ideas inconsistent with history of the Elizabethan times. …show more content…
He was educated in the topics of: mathematics, natural sciences, logic, ethics, literature, and Latin. Although he did not attend a university, it was not uncommon in the 1500’s to solely obtain a high school education. On the other hand, university education was reserved for the wealthy sons of the elite class, and even then, most men wanted to become clergymen. Unfortunately, Shakespeare’s father was a dealer of wool and farm products, which did not qualify for his son to be eligible for a university education. Luckily, the numerous classical and literary references in Shakespeare’s plays were a testament to the excellent education that he received in grammar school, and spoke about his ability of an
The William Shakespeare from Stratford- Upon- Avon was not a literary figure while he was alive. In fact, there is no record of William Shakespeare ever attending a school. Furthermore, William Shakespeare could not even spell his own name the same way two times.
He was considered an academic obsession. “Shakespeare it seems, is not so much a historical figure as an academic obsession (Bryon document 2).” He knew Latin and Greek. “While Jonson’s remarks may have been fairly accurate for the Elizabethan standards of the time, there is growing internal evidence that Shakespeare in fact possessed a considerable command of both Latin and Greek and a surprisingly deep comprehension of classics (Phillips and Hunt document 5).” He was able to translate ancient texts.
Are you a Shakespeare enthusiast or are you skeptical about whether he is the true author of his work? Kier Cutler and Simon Schama go neck to neck to determine the truth. Simon Schama's “Shakespeare Shakedown” and Keir Cutler’s “Top 10 Reasons Shakespeare Did Not Write Shakespeare” are the texts we will be looking at today. This century-long argument is going head to head with one thinking Shakespeare wrote his works, and the other not even believing that he existed! Let's get right into it.
(Doc 8). From all this, we can make a sense of what knowledge Shakespeare possessed. There is only a little about his education. The school he attended, King's New School, had lost records. “...no documentation exists for Shakespeare's education.”
There is no definitive proof that Shakespeare even attend any kind of school. This is a problem that the Shakespearians refuse to acknowledge. As evidenced in Christian’s presentation on the words/ language attributed to Shakespeare, over 3,000 words are accredited to this man. This is absurd due to the likelihood that he did not have any formal education, due to the non-existence of evidence that could be obtained by the believers of Shakespeare. Now that this is out of the way we can move onto his whereabouts from 1585 to
Mark Twain wrote a response to Shakespeare’s writings about who he thought Shakespeare actually was and in that response he does not believe Shakespeare actually wrote his plays and sonnets while showing minimal support that can either be believed in or refuted. From his point of view, Twain believed Lord Bacon was the real writer of the plays and sonnets because his name can be found in multiple of Shakespeare’s works. Shakespeare, who came from humble beginnings where his father was a glove maker, Twain thought could not of wrote such eloquent works because he was from simple beginnings and did not have a college education. Also Twain’s speculation of no collegiate education meant Shakespeare’s scenes in The Merchant of Venice, a common,
The plays and sonnets that shakespeare supposedly wrote could have only been written by someone with knowledge of how to write plays and books and only someone with a great knowledge of law and courtship. Law and courtship is discussed in the plays that shakespeare supposedly wrote, but how could he know if he hasn't gone to Law school like Edward DeVere went to. This evidence supports my claim because someone like shakespeare who only went up to the sixth grade could not of written theses plays. Edward DeVere had the correct education and also went to law school which make sense on how shakespeare's plays talked alot about law which is something Edward Devere knew and not
With Shakespeare most of his writing follows a format of iambic pentameter which is a way words are put together to flow better. People believe that Shakespeare is only to be heard and not read and dissected by students because of this. In “Kill Bill: why we must take Shakespeare out of the classroom” describes this perfectly. “Most of Shakespeare's audiences were illiterate. His words were chosen to be spoken or heard, not to be read and deadened behind a desk – they wither when performance is removed.
According to "Shakespeare shouldn't be taught in schools" by Lillian Belot "Many believe that Shakespeare is far and greatest writer of all time and who am I to dispute that ? " I really can not argue with that statement because I have no otority over shakespearse. Many students do not like his stories. Also according to "Shakespeare shouldn't be taught in schools" by Lillian Belot "Tolstoy didn't like him tough and neither did george Bernard."
In conclusion, William “Bard of Avon’ Shakespeare shouldn’t be taught in the ninth grade curriculum because his playwrights are difficult to understand, it’s not culturally diverse for today’s students, and his work is to
It has been agreed upon between both sides that the Shakespeare of Stratford went to grammar school- the equivalent of elementary school if you live in America- but that is where the disagreements start. According to Simon Schama, Stratfordians believe that Shakespeare possessed the capability to write his extraordinary plays because he studied works of classic literature written by authors such as Cicero, Virgil, and Plutarch. Since Stratfordians believe that ”most of his plays were adapted from earlier works,” he could have been creative enough to write all of the works in his name (Farouky, 2). On the other hand, the Anti-Stratfordians say that there is no proof that the Shakespeare of Stratford was even literate, as there are only 6 surviving copies of signature, all of which are almost illegible (Shakespeare Oxford Fellowship,1). Some of these signatures are even spelled differently than the rest.
Why should Shakespeare be taught in school? Not everyone likes Shakespeare or understands the humor in it. Shakespeare is not the greatest English writer. There is no greatest writer. He is just a normal person that lived over four hundred years ago.
In the analysis and evaluation of this article, it is clear that one detail in the article stands out due to its meaning. In the text, the author states, “About 150 years after his death, questions arose about the authorship of William Shakespeare's plays. Scholars began to claim someone else had written them” (“Authors...Shakespeare”). In this detail, the author connects the sentence to the bigger pictures by bringing out a controversial and interesting point about the authanticity of Shakespear. This all connects to the concept that Shakespear was a mysterious man who lived a confusing life.
Shakespeare should be studied in schools, many of us have mixed feelings when we think of studying Shakespeare at school, but regardless of our opinion of Shakespeare we speak his language every day. It is estimated that Shakespeare added around 1500 new words to the English language. Shakespeare challenges students and benefits them in multiple ways, with difficult language and style using timeless themes and emotions in his plays. Shakespeare should be studied in schools because of the extraordinary quality within them, this exposes students to a multitude of literary techniques. Shakespeare wrote his plays over 400 years ago.
Shakespeare went to grammar school possibly the King's New School until the age of fourteen but he did not continue his schooling at a university (Andrews). Although Shakespeare's formal education ended at grammar school, his plays display that he was well-educated and cultured (“The plays of Shakespeare”). In 1582, at the time when Shakespeare was eighteen he wedded Anne Hathaway and had their first child, Susanna six months after their marriage in 1583 (“William Shakespeare”). After two years, they had twins named Judith and Hamnet (Harlan). It is estimated that Shakespeare reached London around 1588 and began to establish himself as an actor and playwright
