he Grammys have been a large part of the music industry for years. Due to its prestigiousness, thousands of artists worldwide work so hard for a nomination and work even harder to win. But recently, with times changing and society striving to be more inclusive, people have noticed a racist pattern in award recipients. Is a Grammy that important if the most deserving people do not receive one, solely because of their background or race?
What are the Grammys? The Grammys is an award show that recognizes outstanding music released in the previous year. A Grammy is considered the highest achievement one in the music industry can obtain. It is hosted annually in the United States (usually Los Angeles) by the National Academy of Recording Arts

People have made accusations of the Grammys of robbing African-American artists of awards forever. Within their long 65 years of running, only 11 black artists have won album of the year. Furthermore, many artists who have had an unfathomable impact on the music industry do not possess a Grammy to show for it. Incredibly influential rappers like The Notorious B.I.G, Snoop Dogg, 2Pac, Nas, Ice Cube, and even Nicki Minaj have been nominated and robbed on many occasions. None of these artists (whom many consider part of the greatest rappers of all time) has walked away from the show with the famous gold-plated gramophone …show more content…
Being based in Asia hasn’t stopped them from becoming global superstars, and they have gained an immense and loyal following, notorious for defending the members no matter what it takes. BTS got nominated for their first Grammy in 2020 for the song ‘Dynamite’- their first song in only English. As it got released in the heat of the pandemic, its purpose was to cheer people up as they sang about the little things that make life worth living. Many music critics had only good things to say about it and talked about how the happy lyrics and upbeat energy from the song made it so good. Dynamite went on to break many records, much like the rest of their music. It debuted at number one on the Billboard Top 100, making it the band’s first number-one single in the United States, not to mention the first all South-Korean group to dominate the charts to that extent. It beat the record for most downloads in its first week (265,000), previously held by Famous pop star Taylor Swifts Look What You Made Me Do. It debuted on Spotify with 7.778M streams, making it the biggest opening day for a song in all of 2020. The song also went within the Top 10 in 25 countries. At their first Grammys (2020), they performed Seoul Town Road (a remix of the recording-breaking hit Old Town Road) with Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus. Some fans began to get upset. After having three consecutive albums

The year 2006 was memorable for them; Juicy J, Dj Paul, Crunchy Black and Frayser Boy won Oscar for Best Original Song for the song Its Hard out Here for a Pimp. Their group originated a new style of music, crunk style. In 2008 their group was having some conflicts with the label Sony. This lets Juicy J and Dj Paul to pursue their solo careers.
Even though, he just had three solo albums Full Moon Fever, Wildflowers, and Highway Companion, which were released in 1989, 1994’s, and 2006. All of his solo albums were popular and had hit songs such as I Won’t Back Down, Free Falling, You Don’t Know How It Feels, It’s Good to Be King, and Saving Grace. Specially, the second album, which was renewed label from his first album, produced by Rick Rubin, sold over three million
In the super bowl there are tons of commercials. For super bowl 51 it costed 5million dollars for 1 thirty second add. It is so expensive because of how many people watch the super bowl and if a lot of people watch the super bowl a lot of people get to see you’re commercial. The commercial by Kia witch was 61 second long was about 1 million dollars. It was released on December 16th, 2008, and was the fourth studio album. Many fans thought it was just too out there. The band’s hopes were to make the album unique and memorable, and they succeeded, but not in a good way. There were so many extra things happening, that the actual melody was washed out, and the album only sold 149,000 copies on the first week of sales. This isn’t bad, but much less than the previous album, Infinity on High.
Music has brought humans together for century's. Woodstock was no different, it might not have gone to plan but it brought people together. The event was seen by most as a dirty, drug filled, hippie gathering and others, well the others were the ones who went to Woodstock. Some things wood stock faced such as a struggle to land a solid venue, keep customers from camping out, and even get performers to stage is what made this concert so special.
One example is Lil Nas X, a Black male artist that released his song “Old Town Road” in 2019. Old Town Road is a song that “deftly blended country and hip-hop for really the first time, and was removed from the Billboard country charts for not meeting the ‘criteria’ to chart as a country song” (Conway 3). This decision was marked by racial bias as the song became a well-known viral hit, but not including it in the charts just takes away from all the success of Lil Nas X. Due to the limitations on the freedom of Black artists, it is evident that the media and charts aren’t open to Black artists wanting to test out genres like country. This indicates the influence of the Grammys on preventing artists from being able to be represented by who they are as opposed to what they look like. It may not be written in text, but modern-day segregation is looming and limiting growth and opportunity for many Black
Motown was a transformative sound that arrived just at the height of the civil rights movement. Such success coming from a black business and black artists forced the rest of America to reexamine their racial prejudices that they still clung to. It seemed that it’s founder, Berry Gordy, knew from the start that Motown was something special when he hung a sign that read “Hitsville USA” above the recording studio’s headquarters. The success was almost instant for most Motown artists with song after song becoming number one hits on major music charts. However, the success was not easy, as it took strenuous amounts of work to mold the artist’s looks and sounds into something that would popularize them among the white population.
Consequently, they left the record label and joined the MCA records. The new label recorded and released their second album which was self-titled. Tresvant vocal style and personality had already made him stand out as their lead singer. They released several hits with most popular being the "Cool It Now" single.
It took years for them to be accepted by the fans and many of the white
Very similarly to rhythm and blues, rock and roll and the Civil Rights Movement inspired hip hop in a variety of different ways, as African American artists worked to find a space for themselves in the music industry. Not many people find a correlation between African Americans and Rock and Roll, but there’s surprisingly a deep history, and it’s not just white people who developed this specific genre, but there was African American-centered and ghetto-centered versions of rock and roll. “There are enough similarities between, for instance, rock & roll and commercial rap, especially rock rap, to make a case for critically engaging them as interracial arenas where black and white youths, among others, put forward messages and advanced ideals that have been not only informed by the Civil Rights Movement and the Hip Hop Movement, respectively, but in turn, even if only implicitly, have influenced the rhetoric, politics, and aesthetics of these movements” (Rabaka 99). There was a strong transition from this type of “rock rap” music being labeled as ghetto music, into universal music that people of all races and ethnicities would listen to.
J. Cole’s unique style has paid off, given that his most recent album from December 2014 entitled “2014 Forest Hills Drive” went platinum with over 2 million albums sold. This album had no features from any other artists, which has not been done in over 25 years. J. Cole has yet to earn a Grammy Award and to date has only won one Billboard Music Award in his whole career. Although J. Cole does not receive the recognition he deserves for his various accomplishments, he continues to stay on his grind and produce great
In 1968, both Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy were assassinated, leaving the United State in a state of uncertainty. With a nation in need, the Woodstock Music and Art fair arose in 1969, standing against the background of the past year (Evans and Kingbur 20). Max Yasgur, a dairy farmer who leased his farm to the Woodstock promoters, once said to the millions of fans at the festival, “The important thing that you've proven to the world is that... a half a million young people can get together and have three days of fun and music and have nothing but fun and music, and I God Bless You for it!” (Gerdes 4), and that is exactly what the crowd of more than 400,000 fans did.
