Jimmy Valentine could disagree with Yoda when he says love will turn you to the darkside. Jimmy Valentine is a thief and a safe cracker. He even ended up in prison until he was pardoned by the governor. But then he goes to Elmore, where he meets Miss Annabel Adams. There he falls in love and tries to turn his his life around. Jimmy Valentine was trying to live a moral life because he showed responsibility, respect and compassion. One piece of evidence that Jimmy was trying to live a moral life was that he showed compassion. After he saved Agatha, Jimmy went outside to talk to Ben Price, the detective who had come to arrest him. “‘Hello, Ben!’ said Jimmy, still with his strange smile. ‘Got around at last, have you? Well, let's go. I don't know that it makes much difference, now.’”(O. Henry 6) Jimmy respected Ben Price’s job and responsibilities, even though it meant he would go to jail. A man who wasn’t living morally, would not have respected Ben in that way. Earlier in the story, the Adamses went into the bank to see a new vault they put in. “All went inside the high, carved oak railings into the banking room - Jimmy included, for Mr. Adams's future son-in-law was welcome anywhere.”(O. Henry 5)Mr. Adams trusted jimmy in his bank. In order to have gained that kind of trust, Jimmy had to have shown Mr. Adams a lot of respect. If he wasn’t trying to live a moral life, Jimmy wouldn’t have respected him. Finally, “he had won the respect of the community,... and he and Annabel were engaged to be married in two weeks” (O. Henry 3) after only a year of living in Elmore. In order to gain the respect of someone in authority of you, you have to respect them first. One reason for this is because A week after the release of Valentine, 9762, there was a neat job of safe-burglary done in Richmond, Indiana… ‘That's Dandy Jim Valentine's autograph. He's resumed business.’”(O.Henry) Even though Jimmy started safecracking again, he changed into a moral man who earned an honest living. Another example is, when, “A guard came to the prison shoe store, where Jimmy Valentine was assiduously stitching uppers, and escorted him to the front office.” (O. Henry 1) Jimmy was in prison and that's not a good thing. But soon in the story he turns his life around and does try to be moral and respectful, unlike the beginning. Finally, after Annabel asks him to save Agatha, Jimmy agrees and “with that act Ralph D. Spencer passed away and Jimmy Valentine took his place.” (O. Henry 5) O. Henry puts it this way because Ralph D. Spencer wouldn’t and couldn’t crack a safe while Jimmy Valentine would. Also, he only cracked the safe to save Agatha. Not for money. Even though some people says otherwise, Jimmy Valentine tried to live a moral

After Jimmy arrived in Elmore he was truly dedicated to living a moral life; Jimmy did not rob any bank for a year after he arrived, he was going to give up his very expensive robbing tool set, and he changed his name and personality because he was in love with Mrs. Annabel Adams. Once Jimmy Valentine went to in the very small town of Elmore, many things changed. One of those things was that he did not rob or steal anybody else’s money for over a year. “I've quit the old business--a year ago” (a letter Jimmy sent his friend Billy). The reason Jimmy did not steal anybody's money was because he was was too busy with Annabel.

When the act of selflessness is decided, feelings of utter defeat and turmoil are the result. The dominant class has demonstrated in ‘The Great Gatsby’, when selfishness is chosen rather than selflessness, one can have less mishaps in life and be more resilient to the dreadful events that may occur. Tom Buchanan in particular, is notorious for putting himself first in order to be successful, in regards to his job, his social life, and his reputation. For instance, Tom and Gatsby were having an
Jimmy Cross is the first lieutenant who carries pictures and letters from Martha, the woman he loves who—sadly—does not love him back. The pictures and letters from Martha symbolize Jimmy’s longing to be loved and comforted. It is ironic that although he is the first lieutenant who is expected to take charge and lead others, yet he never took charge of his own love life. This is a regret and burden Cross carries to the end of the story. “It was very sad, he thought.
Cross blames himself, knowing “He had loved Martha more than his men, and as a consequence Lavender was now dead…” (p. 121). First Lieutenant Jimmy Cross is distracted by his infatuation for Martha, which ultimately results in Ted Lavender’s death, forcing Cross to realize his fantasies for Martha are wrong and that he is not fulfilling his duties as a lieutenant. Lieutenant Cross is inattentive to the war and his responsibilities because he is unable and unwilling to stop thinking about his adoration for Martha.
He couldn’t help it (432).” This tells you that he is still just a boy at this point, but he knows that he should not be thinking of Martha he should be worrying about the lives of his men. Even so, Lavender is now dead and Jimmy holds himself responsible: “He would dispose of his good luck pebble. Swallow it, maybe… (437).” Mainly he is trying to get rid of all feelings for Martha, he cared more for her and himself, but he does care also about his
Tim O’Brien states, “Lavender was now dead, and this was something he would have to carry like a stone in his stomach for the rest of the war” (O’Brien 16). In this quote, Tim O’Brien explains that since Jimmy Cross blames himself about Ted Lavender’s death, he will always be in lieutenant’s head. Thus, the lieutenant will always feel the guilt. With this, Tim O’Brien makes the reader think that Jimmy Cross is the person to blame since he is the head of the group and he has to pay more attention to his plans. Having questions about his love, Martha, in his mind instead of being careful about his men is the reason of him feeling guilty that “the lieutenant’s in some deep hurt” (17).

As the novel progresses, Nick becomes friends with a man named Gatsby, who is viewed as a mysterious figure to outsiders. Nick finds out his second cousin once removed, Daisy was once in love with Gatsby. Unfortunately for Gatsby, Daisy was more focused on money and the social power, so when he went to war, she did not wait for him, and instead married Tom Buchanan who had lots of “old” money. This shows the moral decay of society because Daisy left a man she loved (Gatsby) because she could not wait for him and he did not have the money. The name Daisy itself shows moral decay because in the novel the color yellow symbolizes moral decay.
