Music therapy is defined as “the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program” (“American Music Therapy Association”). It cures mental issues such as depression, anxiety, and hypertension. Music therapy was approved and became an effective and significant way to cure mental injuries of veterans since World War Two. During World War Two, an era of cruelness and death, military hospitals were filled with physically and mentally injured veterans suffering in recurring haunting nightmares and shocking memories of the battlefield. In 1945, the U.S. War Department even issued Technical Bulletin 187 to create a program that encouraged the use of music to rehabilitate veterans’ emotions.
Music can bring the brightest of joys that keeps us moving through our dull and boring lives. An example of this joy is Ishmael Beah’s life as a boy soldier in his book A Long Way Gone. As he tells you his story, he tells of his dance group with his friends, the times he heard music in the middle of war, and how music saved him from the madness that brewed within him. Music has the unique ability to create peace in a person’s life despite the difficulties surrounding them, and to bring a constant reminder of who they are as a person.
To human beings songs and music in general play a huge part in our lives. In many situations people turn to music. For example when someone is down or upset they might play an upbeat song to try and help their mood. Another example is when someone might be stressed or just unstrung; they turn to music or a certain song to help calm themselves. However music can just as easily induce the same feeling as well as take them away. An example of this is when we hear the “Jaws” theme song and the feeling of danger is immediately felt.
I do believe that music clears my mind and makes me happy no matter what emotion I have before I listen. It has a certain superpower that can change someone from sad to happy or from depressed to proud in a few minutes if you listen to the right songs or genre. I know that just turning on a song that someone likes can make their day. Music has enough power to get someone to get up and dance and that is special. It can power athletes, singers, actors, doctors, teachers, and anyone. By just turning on a song that you like can put you in your own world where no one criticizes you or judges you for being you. Music is an escape from any problem in society and it is meant for everyone. “Music is just something that helps me escape and be totally free from everything.”-David Schmitt. Throughout the novel A Long Way Gone, music is used as a motif. Music is used to distract or calm the soldiers in rehabilitation, as it has the ability to trigger emotional responses. Also, music is used to remind the soldiers of their innocence and life before the war. And lastly music is used to create common ground amongst strangers.

Recent studies have shown that music (listening and playing instruments) have many impacts on children, especially in early stages of development of the child’s “body, brain, and their emotion foundations that support us for the rest of our lives” (Borgese, n.d.).
Listening to music is one of the only activities which involve using both sides of the brain. When concentrating on a specific task you are normally only using one part of your brain while concentrating so the other parts of your brain that is unoccupied drifts off which causes you to lose concentration. The music is beneficial because it will keep the other parts of your brain busy while you are concentrating which will prevent you from drifting off and losing concentration. Music has also been found to engage the area of the brain involved with paying attention.
In Edvard Grieg’s “Morning Mood”, a well-recognized piece of classical music, a flute is the first instrument one hears. The beautiful whistle of the flute’s first note strikes a high A, played softly, and the softness continues as the flute travels down the scale, only to play a C and make its way, legato, back up to an A (Morning Mood: Peer Gynt No.1). As the piece continues, violins, cellos, oboes, and many other instruments are softly introduced to complement the flute’s high and quiet notes. It is only when the flute crescendos in the middle of the piece that the other instruments follow along. This continues Grieg’s trend, on this track, of forming the other instrument’s parts around the flute. Occasionally, the flute will soften and be replaced by another wind or string, but the trend of surrounding the main instrument with other pieces still continues.
