On February 14, 2018, America was struck with another merciless school shooting. A 19 year-old Nikolas Cruz gunned down his former (was expelled at the time of shooting) high school, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. There were 17 victims that will forever be in the hearts of their fellow classmates. Nikolas later after the shooting blended into the crowd, and then went to a subway and ordered a drink. Now right in that very moment, there is definitely something wrong with the security system in the high school. It was reported that their surveillance system was actually 20min behind real time. This allowed Nikolas to slip into the crowd. Another problem was that officers were stationed at the building, so where were they during the school shooting? Well I can tell you that an officer named Scot Peterson locked up at the West entrance of the school, and remained outside while he SHOULD of went into the building, confronted the gunman, then killed the gunman. …show more content…
I get that people hunt and like to shoot recreationally, but do an 18 year-old student or adult need the power to buy an assault rifle? The last point I’ll state is that our country should change the legal age to buy firearms. In 1984 Congress passed a law stating that the states raise the drinking age to 21 or lose 10% of federal highway funds. They did this, because scientist believed that at age 21 you’re body has finally reached its peak in growth, so Congress passes a law to protect its citizens’ health and well-being. So why not take this kind of action with gun control? I feel as if scientist think 21 is when the body is fully developed; I would think the brain would be too. Raising the age to legally purchase a firearm would not hurt the general public. Yes, It would make them upset, but it wouldn’t affect the 2nd amendment. We would still have the right to bear arms, but some of us would just have to wait a little longer to enact that
When the terrible acts were finished, the two ended their lives at the crime scene. This has gone down in history as one of the worst high school shootings ever. After the catastrophic event, people were in shock and in fear for their lives. The majority of people would not have assumed that two young 17 and 18-year-olds would have been capable of such evil.
Part 1: Introduction and Description of the Incident On February 14, 2018, the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, USA, became the site of a horrific mass shooting. The shooter, Nikolas Cruz, was a former student at the school who had been expelled the year prior after a series of disciplinary incidents. The shooting occurred in the afternoon while classes were still in session, and lasted for approximately six minutes.
It is absurd to give anyone under the age of twenty a gun. Twenty is the best age because you are more mature than. Twenty may not even be a the best age, because you are allowed to start drinking at twenty one and drinking and guns are not a good mix. You need to wait until you are sure that you are mature enough.
This world has become filled with unimaginable violence and a significant amount of deaths caused by mass public shooters. The targets of the mass shootings have been places that have a gun-free zone sign posted on the wall. In 1995, the gun-free school zone act was passed which prohibited a person, with possession of a firearm, to step foot on school grounds. This act would allow certain people to be exempt from the gun-free school zone, which includes retired law enforcement officers and a person licensed to carry a concealed weapon. This bill would keep a school relatively safe because it would mean a person that does not have a license to carry a concealed firearm would be charged with a felony.
Adam looked up and saw the source of his agony sit down in a chair across the room. Adam grabbed the gun from his bag and took his aim, and pulled the trigger.¨ School violence is at an all time high. School shootings and other illegal activities are not uncommon in schools. Teachers currently are not armed, and can do very little to protect the students in their classroom. Teachers should be allowed to be armed during school hours, because they can protect their students, keep the school a safe place, and prevent other illegal activities.
Opponents of the age restrictions believe that by increasing the age required to purchase and own guns, it violated a basic right held by all Americans. A belief held by these people is, “On the other side of the debate, lawmakers… opposed the new law, saying it trampled on Second Amendment rights” (Mazzei, Patricia). The Second Amendment gives the right to all people in the United States to bear arms (guns) and by increasing the age to purchase and own guns, the law would not allow 18- to 20-years-olds to arm themselves. This would violate the basic right of all the legal and law abiding citizens that fall within this age category, who are adults in the United States. By preventing them from getting the weapons and guns they wanted, these people will not be able to protect themselves from criminals and murderers with
The World We Created "Who cares. Whatever. Not my problem. " These are the ignorant thoughts of many when confronted with the option of helping, the option of possibly being part of ending the misery of others. Indifference, the insensitivity, the carelessness, the alienation of human thoughts, actions, and words are willingly a danger to all.
The shooting in Parkland, Florida has been the talk in the news, newspaper and in schools. The shooter was mentally ill, and he bought a rifle legally, which should not have been allowed to happen. Many people such as the FBI, the president, the parents of Cruz, and Cruz himself are in the wrong for what happened. There needs to be more precautions so things like the school shootings and massacres can come to an end. Things such as gun laws, more FBI involvement and more security at schools can keep the schools safe because the government can keep stopping bad people from getting through all the “loop holes” and causing harm to innocent people.
On April 10th, 2017, a gunman walked into an elementary school classroom and opened fire. Killing a total of four people, two students, an adult, and the gunman himself. What makes this case strange is who the gunman was after. On Monday, Cedric Anderson walked into his wife’s, Karen Smith, special needs classroom. Smith had around fifteen special needs children in the classroom at the time when Anderson opened fired.
At one point, Abby Zwerner emailed the school board with her concerns and was ignored. Before this day there are many records of attempts to get this student either pulled out of the classroom and the help he needed. Notably the day of the shooting there were also multiple times that administration could have prevented this incident. This was a failure in the system that caused harm to
A nonprofit group that attempts to prevent gun violence called “Everytown for Gun Safety,” released a statement about school shootings. The organization claimed that the school shooting at “[Marjory Stoneman Douglas High] is the 18th school shooting in the U.S. in 2018.’” (Cox and Rich). In less than three months, there have been eighteen school shootings. This shows that schools are no longer a safe environment.
I think it is clear that America’s lenient Gun Laws have no doubt been a huge factor on the staggering amount of gun violence for a long time. I do believe, however, in people’s rights to defend and arm themselves, it is part of their constitution, I just feel that it is necessary that the laws regarding the 2nd amendment need to be reinforced and should introduce some restrictions to ensure that only the people who are mentally capable of wielding a firearm, without causing harm to society, should be allowed to acquire one. I do also recognise that there are already a staggering number of guns in the possession of the general public, and I feel that the only way to tackle this issue is cultural change in America, changing the views of individuals on the idea of guns, but change is always
"How do we allow a gunman to come into our children 's school? How do they get through security? What security is there?" Those are the words of Lori Alhadeff, who lost her daughter, Alyssa, in the Florida school shooting on the 14th. Lori is correct, what security is there?
Everyone in the school was probably afraid that they were going to see the monster, or in their case the shooter, any second. “He swept into the open double doors of the gymnasium and scanned the handful of sprawled bodies, the basketball cart overturned and the globes resting up against the far wall- but no shooter” (Picoult 22). This in text example shows you how eerie the scene of the school was at the time of the shooting and Patrick’s destiny to find the shooter. When I picture the school the day after the shooting, I see caution tape around the whole school. I also imagine the school looking like a place of burden.
These terrible people make us all question what can be done to better protect the students and teachers that fill our nation 's schools. We need to make schools safer by, implementing more violence prevention, more school resource officers, and more metal detectors. Often times after a school shooting occurs, it is common to hear about the warnings signs that went unnoticed until after the tragic event had occurred. Since we have missed the signs, time and time again, we need to train one another to be more aware of what is going around us.
