When I moved from Ohio to Alabama, and then back again, I was lost, all of my pride had been obliterated in two long and drawn out sweeps. By the time both moves were over, I was down in the dumps for around two years due to my stress and anxiety destroying me. I learned how dangerous stress was and how it can have very bad effects on your mind and body. Why did stress cause so many undesirable effects? Well, in short, all kinds of stress are harmful and bad. First and foremost, when it comes to living a happy life, good mental health is paramount, and stress can have awful effects on one’s mental health. Harry Mills, PhD, acknowledges the great possibility of a connection between stress and depression in the article, “Mental and Emotional Impact of Stress”. Mills describes the science behind it, explaining, “Byproducts of stress hormones can act as sedatives. When such hormone byproducts occur in large amounts, they may contribute to a sustained feeling of low energy or depression”. Questioning the Incomprehensible Mental illness is defined as health conditions involving changes in thinking, emotion or behavior (or a combination of these) (American Psychiatric Association). There are different types of depression and they effect people differently also. With major depression working, sleeping, eating and spending time with friends and family becomes difficult to do because there is the constant feeling of hopelessness. Seeing that I have family and friends who suffer from depression, I wanted to learn more and see why people who are depressed think the way they do, what goes on inside their head to make them feel hopeless and if medication is the only way to help deal with depression even though for some people medicine doesn’t fully help them. For example, these individuals should be receiving drug therapies or self-management services so that they can assist them more efficiently and help them control their conditions. Mental health issues are on the rise, especially among the youth, 6 out of 10 young people do not receive mental health treatment for major depression. Currently over 40 million Americans are currently dealing with a mental health issue and 56 percent are not receiving proper treatment. (Mental Health America). The health care reform has reduced insurance premiums for adults who have a mental health condition, however premiums and copayments are still not affordable for everyone. With the rise of mental health issues, the funding for mental illness should also increase to meet the need.
Moving is a burden that has profoundly altered my outlook on things. Going back a few years, I moved to the United States, which meant I’d have to be placed in a new school. On the other hand a lot of stress can backfire completely and can be a horrible thing for you. Too much stress can even cause health problems for you. According to Mayo Clinic stress can affect your physical health as well as your mental health. For physical health it can cause head and stomach aches, sleep problems, chest pain and even a change in your se drive. Stress can also affect your behavior, it can cause your to have anger outburst, social withdrawal and might even cause you to turn to drugs and alcohol.
