The American Dream In order to achieve “The American Dream,” a person needs four main fields - family, power, wealth, and education. Families are lucky if they are able to provide these things. The American dream is “Work Hard, Relax Harder,” while still somehow climbing your way to the top. However, who has the true capability of this? The wealthiest 1% (the big corporations) are those who can afford to buy whatever they want. Those who are rich enough have the power to exploit the loopholes in our government. They are the ones who have the real “American Dream”. Wealth, education, and power are only truly available to the 1% of the world. To begin, I am going to talk about some more down to earth American Dream goals, not the ones that we dream of growing up in The Big Apple and hit it big with an interning gig at a huge firm. First we are looking at the family aspect of the American Dream.
The American Dream is something that families strive for: two kids, a house, a dog, and liberties and freedoms. However, families can also be cruel and unforgiving, even greedy. In the first book, Grapes of Wrath by Fitzgerald , family betrayal and strife are preset and hard to deny. Families should come together and work out their solution. Although, Casey remarks, “He was foolin, all the time. I think he knowed it. An’ Grampa didn 't die tonight, he died the minute you took him off the place” (Steinbeck, 88).
