It may seem absurd at first, but the idea of a “Buy Nothing Day” may be what society truly needs. The main focus of this day is to reduce the damage we put on the environment from pollution, overconsumption, and making wrong choices. The “Buy Nothing Day” should be in full effect and should be incorporated into every month for the sake of the environment, the people, and the world. Initially, many individuals may just ignore this movement, due to the fact that nothing can be purchased on this specific day; but if they were to give a chance to this movement, they could see that the benefits outweigh the negatives. A decrease in excess consumption may just help people make better choices in the future. Instead of running around and buying everything …show more content…
Think about all of the electricity that will be saved and not wasted when the “Buy Nothing Day” is in full effect. Different types of resources could be saved for another day. Many consumers are dependent on transportation like cars, trains, and airplanes. All of which pollute as they are being used, whether it be coal or fossil fuels. The “Buy Nothing Day” not only saves our non-renewable resources, but also gives us the time to ponder about new resources that could be developed. The lack of pollution would also help out our endangered animals like the Polar Bears who are suffering as we speak as their ice is constantly melting. Many countries would kill to have the resources we have, and with this movement we can save incredible amounts of energy and resources that could be distributed to different countries in need. Not only would this help them but it would ease tensions between many countries. Individuals may also begin to question themselves on whether they really need a certain product or service. With this day they will discover whether they can survive without the items they purchase daily. A similar movement is “Earth Day” which mainly focuses on the environment and has had much success, so there is no reason why the “Buy Nothing Day” doesn’t have similar results. We people have done a lot of damage and harm to this world, but now it is time to make
Many Americans love shopping, especially during the holidays, with its captivating discounts and sales, which lead to uncontrollable splurges on irrelevant things. According to Quindlen, this is an example of America’s crazed consumerism and it is absolutely absurd. In her article, “Honestly, You Shouldn’t Have”, she states that there is currently an assumption that purchasing American merchandises symbolize an act of patriotism and at the same time, build a strong economy. She also states that we, as Americans, need to acknowledge important spiritual values such as friends and family rather than material goods.
The Affordable Care Act has provided many Americans access to affordable healthcare. The group of newly insured Americans have reported that they have timely access to physicians and healthcare. Previously there was concern that the Affordable Care Act would limit access to physicians based on provider networks. Provider networks have proved less of an issue than previously anticipated partially because many of the previously uninsured Americans were not able to secure a relationship with a set provider or physician group. Some areas of concern that remain are high out of pocket expenses incurred with some marketplace plans.

I think that even though we have finished our 10 days we will be conscience to what we are doing and try to hold back on all of the paper and plastic products. But even though we might be cutting back others might not be and I think a lot more people should realize how this is affecting our
When you see a litterbug throw the rest of their half-eaten lunch on the ground or dispose of a cigarette out their Hummer window, you might be disgusted by the fact that, that someone negatively impacts the environment. Most human beings know that our negative actions towards the environment have a ripple effect like a drop in the ocean. However, not everyone cares or sees the impact that we all individually have on the earth. In the essay, Our Unhealthy Future Under Environmentalism, John Berlau, an American economist, debates that conserving and preserving our environment is unnecessary and environmentalist should chill out with this save the planet bull crap. This essay comes directly from Berlau’s book called, Eco-Freaks: Environmentalism
Howard Zinn famously once said: “The First Amendment is whatever the cop on the beat says it is.” Zinn’s words may have best been exemplified in Ferguson, Missouri, in the aftermath of the Michael Brown shooting. The First Amendment states that no law shall be made “abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble” (U.S. Constitution). Yet in Ferguson, protesters were confronted by police officers carrying military-grade equipment, and reporters were arrested while simply doing their job. Zinn appears to have been right; at least temporarily, the rights an American has under the First Amendment are whatever the cop on the beat says they are.
In “Why Bother?” an article published in the New York Times Magazine, commentator Michael Pollan questions the severity that contributes to environmental problem and how an individual should attempt to make an impact regardless of the miniscule effect it will have presently and in the future. Pollan discusses how an individual's endeavors remain unnoticed when taking into account the consequences of one’s environmentally friendly actions. The concept of being named a liberal is discussed and its correlation towards one's decisions in changing one’s manner. Implementing laws that would promote green behavior is a drastic step to help the environment, but they would be very simple so everyone can comply.
The First Thanksgiving Everyone knows about Thanksgiving and eating turkey and pie, with a little cranberry sauce. Even though that is not what the pilgrims and Indians really did on the first Thanksgiving. Most elementary schools teach about how the pilgrims and Indians were friends. That they wore nice clothing, and ate at a giant table all together with a cornucopia in front of them.
Chris McCandless was in his early 20’s, he was the kind of that guy that wanted to learn and experience life without all of the material things. He wanted to be independent from his parents and friends so Chris did something that would be insane for most of us humans but to him, it wasn’t. He went into the wild of Alaska for months, in fact, McCandless even thought he could make it out alive at the end of his journey. As a matter of fact, he was known as being a risk taker and enjoyed being out and about in the nature side of the world. Many would believe that Chris McCandless went into the wild to purposely kill himself; however, I myself believe that McCandless did not do it purposely.
Consumption cannot be avoided, but as a society something has to change for the better. The only other option is inevitable chaos and disaster. People need to
Did you know that Canada just quit making their penny? (Source 1) They aren't the first of many countries to have made this decision. Whether or not to keep the penny is a surprisingly heated debate. The penny should be removed from American currency for a variety or reasons, it costs too much money to make, it wastes money, and plenty of other countries have gotten rid of it and they're fine.
“Money” Analysis Paper In MP Dunleavey’s essay, “Buy Yourself Less Stuff”, she discusses various flaws with our society’s use of money and suggests a few solutions to correct those flaws. Most people assume that buying things and having stuff will give them a lasting happiness, but the truth is the happiness that having material items brings is only short-lived. People continue to chase after this lasting happiness which creates what Dunleavey refers to as the “never-ending treadmill of consumption.” To avoid being on this treadmill, she suggests spending money only on things that will benefit people’s long-term happiness.
Home Economics Argument Essay Did you know that today 28% of americans don’t know how to cook? Bringing back home economics could have drastic effects on these statistics. Home economics is a class where kids learn important skills such as cooking, sewing, personal finance, etc. Home ec became a problem after in the 1960’s and 70’s the women’s movement saw home economics as a way to confine women to traditional domestic roles.
But that still won’t get rid of pollution. Not everyone needs to stop doing any activities that causes pollution. But, everyone needs to at least try to reduce the amount of activities they do that cause pollution. Simple acts from using common transportation to reusing plastic bags are extremely helpful to our environment and future environment. Start acting now before it’s too late.
Should People Be Required to Recycle? If you could help your community and world for the better, what would you do? Recycling and getting others to recycle helps our Earth become cleaner and more alive, other than polluted and ruined. In some households, a table argument is whether recycling is bad or good and if it should be required.
