The myth that social security will no longer exist in the future is due to the depletion of the saved funds that make up a portion of social security. However, because social security is a “pay-as-you-go system…it’s never been primarily run on saved money…taxes from today’s workers are used to fund the benefits of today’s retirees” (Regnier 2015). Because of this, social security can only run-out if workers stop paying taxes. The amount of social security benefits that each generation receives is highly reliant on the number of workers in the lower generations. In order to keep the amount of social security benefits stable is to increase, or decrease, the social security tax to compensate for the amount of people that receive the benefits.
In some of these families both parents work multiple jobs, and that does not provide the full amount of money to keep the family afloat. Rent is the most expensive part of a person’s fees like this example where “Some parents forked out what they made at one job entirely on rent.” (p.89) Records also show that “Often, there was little left for food after the rent was aid. Working families went hungry at the end of the month. (p.90) When people are put in a tough spot where working part time or full time is out of the picture; it gives them the opportunity to either sit back and do nothing about it and complain ; or make money where it is possible and trust in God. George, who is one of many stroke victims that are physically unable to work, did something that I thought was very different, and stood out compared to how most other people would react.
Not to long after, “FDR created the first large-scale national welfare system in response to the Great Depression (1929–39), when the percentage of the labor force that was unemployed reached as high as 25 percent” (“Welfare Policy”). Poor people apply to welfare programs, which aid them if they do not have a job or enough income to support their families which reduces poverty, homelessness, unemployment, and hunger. “Yet, welfare programs have caused laziness among people because there is still a generous government safety net in place for the unemployed, including federal programs that extend jobless benefits for up to 99 weeks. And now, there is growing anecdotal evidence that people who might be able to get jobs are choosing to live on the dole rather than work” (Newman). With so many people living on welfare programs, jobs are not receiving workers, there are more homeless people, and a ridiculous amount of federal money in place to support these programs.
Though looking around the world there are more people whose living in poverty and they trying to put an end to it and find food. For example, in the United States a lot of people living in poverty mostly immigrants because a lot of them do not have the right documents to work and some chose not to work at all. In the United States people in poverty are not given much importance nor any help because they are poor and cannot afford much. A source Rethinking Poverty: Which Way Now, states that 1.4 billion people living in poverty. more clearly, poverty is the cause of hunger and death.
This situation does not happen for everyone today. Equally as important Eskow wrote, “One-fifth of all employed Americans must find ways to supplement their income just to pay bills and buy groceries” (Eskow 1). This is showing that a lot of people do not earn enough money to even just pay for necessities. These people could be checking their balance in the bank to see how much they could spend possibly everyday. This is certainly not the American Dream.
Poverty – the lack of money, need or scarcity. Poverty in America is an on growing problem in America due to many reasons. Although many people currently in poverty resort to the government providing welfare, the government could’ve put them in their position in the first place. As stated by David Brooks of the New York Times, “The problem is not lack of attention, and it’s not mainly lack of money.” He continues by stating how poverty has scarcely changed in the past thirty years, also saying how much money is spent on children in schools per year in Baltimore, $15,483 per child. However, in other states with high immigrant presence, the poverty rates are immensely higher.
But, I would not support income redistribution because some people take advantage of the income redistribution even though they are capable of working. They live separate from their families just to get food stamps or other benefits. For some families, the welfare programs go till three generations. People do not feel the need to work hard and obtain money from these
However, the unemployment rate had not changed much within those years. With a significant amount of individual unemployed the nation suffers. As the number of unemployed continues to climb or the longer they are without work the more money the government has to pay them in benefits. The effects of being unemployed also affect other businesses; due to unemployed individuals are not being able to spend money as they would if they were working businesses suffer, over long periods of time that particular business may lay off staff; increasing the number of people unemployed or potentially lose the business. Furthermore, the lack of being employed affects a family, Britney’s mother was affected tremendously and caused her hospitalization because she couldn’t deal with the stress of her family lacking an income.
After reading two articles by Saltsman and Surowiecki debating changes involving pay, the government should not raise the minimum wage. Saltsman states most people who work for minimum wage do not actually live under the poverty line. Therefore, spiking up the minimum wage will do little for those working for low wages. However, Surowiecki says that those working for minimum wage have changed from the traditional teenager to the breadwinner of the household. Saltsman explains this problem when he says that most people working for minimum wage do not live by themselves; thus families in this situation live off of more than just one income.
Welfare is a government program that provides money, medical care, food, housing, and other things people need to afford. People who can receive help from these programs are children, elders, disabled, and others who cannot support their families on their current income. Some laws that were enforced during the 90’s, restricted welfare benefits for new residents for one year to the amount that received in the state where they previously lived. After living in the state you have come to for a full year, you may reapply and then get that states full Social Welfare benefits. One recipient challenged the policy saying it discouraged poor families from moving and violates their constitutional right to move to another state.
Regardless of FASFA and high paying jobs, some students are still unable to afford college tuition. What about the students whose parents make too much money to qualify for financial aid, but all of their parent’s money is going to bills? Just because a student’s parent makes a lot of money does not mean they are capable to pay tuition that is over a thousand dollars. Another point she argues is that standardized testing is misused, and hurts the
Currently, the Government provides millions of house with some type of assistance. Most of those serviced by the government are minimum wage employees who do not make enough to support their families with the current amount. Raising minimum wage means some of these people would be able to better support themselves without leaning as heavily on social programs and this would ultimately mean lower taxes or a reallocation of those funds to support other
Many conclusions of research have stated that raising the minimum wage will unlikely ease poverty, while some states say that raising the minimum wage will help lower-skilled workers out of poverty. The minimum wage of the United States is $7.25 per hour. Most people start out with a minimum wage and eventually move to higher paying jobs in the future. Those who have minimum wage careers are usually mothers of young children, less educated, or live outside urban areas. Minimum wage increases have lead people to poverty, having a negative impact on society; therefore minimum wages should not be increased.
The bill that was supposed to be passed to help soldiers get more benefits was denied by us government and shoot down by 41 senators. The reason for that is because the seniors could not agree on how money should be spent on veterans a year. The government spent 3 billion dollars and they are not even sure if the effects are even helping the soldiers with the treatment that they are given. Ptsd is not taken taken seriously enough to tho very high and rapid growth in suicide rates. Which to current estimates is taking at least on average 22 soldiers a day in total 8008 a year due to the fact they can 't get the help or think the help won’t help them at
People who have low wage jobs live paycheck to paycheck and rely on public assistance as a supplement. Poverty has a negative effect on families such as access to resources, school choice, and social mobility. Minimum wages have been stagnant since 2009 Congress refuses to increase the wages. A solution to end poverty is to increase wages and create jobs. Most Republican politician agrees on cutting public assistance programs.
