Depression is a mental disorder that affects one’s thoughts, mood, and possibly their entire body. There are three type of depression which are dysthymia, major depression, and bipolar disorder, each with their own causes and symptoms. The treatments for these types of depression are generally a mix of antidepressants and psychotherapy. There are multiple causes of depression. A common cause of depression is moaning caused by a recent loss, or something similar. These are suitable reactions to a loss, and are generally short lived and pose no problem. Two types of therapies used for the treatment of depression are talking and behavioral therapies. In talking therapies, patients will talk to their therapist about their problems. In behavioral therapy, therapists teach their patients how to have more rewarding actions and help them forget their behavior that helped cause their depression. Short term therapies are also effective for treating depression in certain situations. The two most commonly used are interpersonal, deal with the patient’s relationships that may of caused their depression, and cognitive therapies, the therapist focuses on helping their patient change their negative thinking and behavior that contributes to their depression. Another type of therapy, known as psychodynamic therapy, is a therapy used to treat depression that is rooted in someone’s childhood. In psychodynamic therapy the therapist tries to resolve the internal childhood conflicts of the patient. Biomedical therapies consist the use of medicine and other medical treatments such as electroconvulsive therapy to treat psychological disorders which we say in this weeks video. Antidepressants such as Paxil, Prozac and Zoloft, are some of the medications used in biomedical therapy. However, the most known out there being Prozac. Prozac has become the most effective antidepressant, as it has much milder side effects (Hockenbury and Hockenbury 2013).

Questioning the Incomprehensible Mental illness is defined as health conditions involving changes in thinking, emotion or behavior (or a combination of these) (American Psychiatric Association). There are different types of depression and they effect people differently also. With major depression working, sleeping, eating and spending time with friends and family becomes difficult to do because there is the constant feeling of hopelessness. Seeing that I have family and friends who suffer from depression, I wanted to learn more and see why people who are depressed think the way they do, what goes on inside their head to make them feel hopeless and if medication is the only way to help deal with depression even though for some people medicine doesn’t fully help them. What is the science behind depression and what makes a person’s brain chemistry without depression different from someone who suffer with depression?

Mental health issues are on the rise, especially among the youth, 6 out of 10 young people do not receive mental health treatment for major depression. Currently over 40 million Americans are currently dealing with a mental health issue and 56 percent are not receiving proper treatment. (Mental Health America). The health care reform has reduced insurance premiums for adults who have a mental health condition, however premiums and copayments are still not affordable for everyone. With the rise of mental health issues, the funding for mental illness should also increase to meet the need.
Lastly, closely observing a patient’s behavior and physical appearance can be a red flag. Depression can lead to more negative/reserved behavior and a lack of physical hygiene (Sue, 174). When coming up with a treatment plan that uses antidepressants it is first vital that one gives a full disclosure about the medication (The Agenda, 10:50). The medication will not work instantaneously and may be a long road before the right medication is found. The medication’s side effects should also be disclosed so the patient can be fully aware of what to look out for and a specific guide to follow if the patient is feeling that the medication is making them worse.
