Affirmative action was first proposed by Vice President Richard Nixon in 1959, and would be expanded upon during the civil rights era in the 1960s to end discrimination, and be away for white people to atone for what they had done to minorities in the past. Affirmative action allows minorities who are stricken by poverty to be accepted into school that they would otherwise not be. Thought this program had good intentions and heart, in reality it would only cause discrimination to become worse. Affirmative actions must be abandoned due to the negative impact it has on our colleges. There are a lot of arguments that defend the use of affirmative action and advocate its effect on college campuses.
Imagine being discriminated against just because of the skin color you were born with. In addition to promoting more power for the people of color in society these strong people were pushing for equality among everyone. Often times today the Black Power movement is misjudged or looked down upon, but if you look at what they really stood for it was not black superiority
However, they counteract this good by increasing sectionalism with pro-black movements. Hoteps often times call pro-black movements in America lazy for focusing first on combating oppression. But this is a remark often time used by racist white people to say “my oppression of you is not the issue, you are”. Ignoring how oppression affects black people’s ability to move forward in society. Police brutality, housing discrimination and the criminalization of black men and women all affect their ability to succeed and advance.
African Americans were faced with lots of racism and oppression. The reason civil rights organizations were established was after the increase of racial discrimination during this era. To summarize, William Edward Burghardt Dubois and Booker T. Washington did not see eye to eye on many topics, had different ideas on progressivism, yet still were able to merge their ideas to help Blacks gain equal rights. They had differences in early life, ideologies, and background. But still had the same ideas of social change and education, which help modernize the world we live in
Weak affirmative action which is just an effort to ensure that all qualified minority groups are considered whereas the strong one is when some sort of preference is given to the minority candidate. There have been some key milestones over recent decades that have improved confidence and trust amongst minority ethnic communities such as changes in the police and the way it operates and the introduction of education and multi-culturalism within Britain. However, I do feel that BME Communities are still discriminated against by the CJS due to many failures involving lack of education, integration and inequalities that exist in society and institutions. The CJS may be seen as illegitimate, which can encourage BME groups to not comply with the law which can have catastrophic consequences (Tyler, 1990). Black minorities are especially over-represented in the CJS and despite many other explanations for this as discussed in this essay; discrimination unarguably must play some part, as the figures are extortionately unrepresentative across the whole spectrum of the CJS. It is also true to say that many other social groups also face discrimination within the CJS such as gender, social class or sexual orientation, which is a huge worry especially in today’s society where things are more socially accepted.

Before the Fisher case, in 1996, in HOPWOOD, the Fifth Circuit of Appeals ruled that the University of Texas could not use race as a factor for attaining diversity. In addition to the ruling, this legislation had one exception, Texas high school seniors who were in the top ten percent of their class were would gain automatic admission to any Texas state university. The University of Texas research study called Proposal to Consider Race and Ethnicity in Admissions, the school believed they were failing to enroll underrepresented students needed to attain the full educational benefits of diversity (R. Kennedy 2013). The University of Texas began using race as factor when choosing new and incoming students for enrollment. They argue that the real issue lies with the fact that colleges rely too heavily on the SAT in admission decisions. Scores of studies have shown that the SAT and ACT are poor indicators of students’ future success in college. Despite this, many colleges will still use these tests to weed out students who scored low, students that they predict will perform poorly in college, regardless of their levels of achievement, academic or otherwise, outside of standardized testing. The Court acknowledges racial inequality and Congress’s right to “act affirmatively” to prevent discrimination and its effects. Still similar people applying for the same job still may be treated differently based on their race. Minorities may have a difficult time finding housing because of prejudices held by landlords, real estate agents, and mortgage lenders. Minority business owners sometimes cannot secure contracts despite having the highest bid. Affirmative action may fulfill the Fourteenth Amendment’s idea of equal protection.
