He made Athens the political and cultural focus of Greece with the development of the Athenian democracy and empire in the late 5th Century BCE and is well known for the rebuild of the Acropolis which begun in 447BCE. Pericles successfully led a military campaign in Corinth and sponsored the formation of the Athenian province in Thrace and Black Sea coast in 454BCE before being elected one of Athens’ leading generals in 443BCE which he held for the remainder of his life. Pericles was born into one of the leading families in Athens; his father being a military commander for Athens in the battle of Mycale in 479BCE and his mother belonging to the culturally powerful Alcmaeonidae family. The period between 500 B.C.E to 338 B.C.E is referred to as “Classical Greece” due to the many achievements taken place, as well as the blossoming democracy in Athens, under the leadership of Pericles. One of the major confrontations during this period was between the Greek states and the Persian Empire. His most famous tragedies were Oedipus the King and Antigone. Although, his tragedies entertained people, they also deep meaning that depicted political power and philosophical matters within society. An example in one of his tragedies that shows how it reflects society was in his play, Antigone. In Antigone, he uncovers the conflict between divine and state law because he wanted to reflect how they affected Athenian society (Sophocles Facts 9). Another example was in his other play, Oedipus the King.
Aristotle was born in Macedonia and was an Ancient Greek philosopher who made significant contributions on theater, biology, physics, mathematics, metaphysics, logic, agriculture, dance and medicine (Kant 87). He was one of the students of Plato and further took Socrates studies. In comparison to Socrates and Plato, Aristotle was more empirical minded and composed, in such a way that he rejected theories that were proposed by Plato. Aristotle transformed people as polymath and prolific writers as a result of the different concepts of knowledge he argued. Due to his wide knowledge and application of different concepts Aquinas refereed Aristotle as the Philosopher (Kant 88).
In case of fifth century Athens politics needs reformation so Aristophanes brought the corruption of political leaders on stage. Chorus in the Frogs: Muse of the sacred dances, advance and come to enjoy my song, to see the great throng of people, where wits sit by the thousand more honorable than Cleophon, on whose babbling lips roars terribly a Thracian swallow sitting on an alien leaf. (675-84) Oratory had evidently fallen from her high estate. That the eloquence of Cleophon was of an inferior order. Without any pretenceto the thunders and lightnings which Pericles had thrown into his addresses to the people, the eloquence of Cleophon seems to have been inferior even to the fluent and powerful oratory of Cleon.
Aristophanes’ major points on love are centered on a myth. According to Aristophanes, a long time ago there were three genders, male, female and androgynous, “…a distinct gender as well as name, combining male and female” (Gill 22). These people had two identical faces on one head and doubled the limbs. The three genders were very strong and eventually tried to attack the gods to gain power. To punish humans for their arrogance, Zeus decided to cut them in half, “I shall now cut each of them into two; they will be weaker…”
Introduction The purpose of this essay is to investigate the women’s role in Classical Greece society and literature (5th/4th century b.C.). Therefore, I decided to discuss and analyse one of the most controversial comedies of that time, “Lysistrata” by Aristophanes. This text shows how women, sick of their submissive and powerless position in the political scenario of Athens and Sparta, come on the scene and, through a smart stratagem, achieve their expected result.

In most cases, Greek plays fall under one of two categories: tragedy or comedy. A tragedy is an event causing great suffering, destruction, and distress, such as a serious accident, crime, or natural catastrophe whereas, a comedy is a professional entertainment consisting of jokes and satirical sketches, intended to make an audience laugh. The acclaimed play, Antigone, written by Sophocles, can be portrayed as a tragedy. In this play, the main character, Antigone, rebels against Creon, king of Thebes, by burying her brother, Polyneices, after Creon announces to everyone that he is not to be buried. Creon later discovers what she has done, and sentences her to death.
