Army Knowledge Management (AKM) is important to Senior Warrant Officers as our cohort continues to grow, it will continue to be even more important in the future. We as a force need to follow the principles of AKM so that we are prepared for battle and future conflicts as we currently exist in a rapidly evolving operational environment, where knowledge and information are just as critical to the success of battle as weapons and Soldiers are. Out of the twelve principles outlined in the “Army Knowledge Management Principles” paper I feel that principles four and eleven are the most important to a Senior Warrant Officer, in making a stronger and more agile force. According to the “Army Knowledge Management Principles” paper, principle four states that we should “use every interaction whether face-to-face or virtual as an opportunity to acquire and share knowledge” (p. 4). As a Senior Warrant Officer our bread and butter is knowledge and being able to gain and share it. While we may already have some knowledge we should continue to learn every change we can. According to Army Techniques Publication 6-01.1 there are two types of knowledge, tacit and explicit knowledge (p. 1-3). The first is tacit knowledge, this is knowledge that we as individuals have gained through our life experiences and is completely unique to ourselves. The second is explicit knowledge and according to ATP 6-01.1 it is a “codified or formally document knowledge organized and transferred through” books and publications produced by the Army and other Department of Defense organizations (p. 1-3). We need to make this a daily priority to gain knowledge that will help advance the skills and abilities of our force, Sr. Warrant Officers also need to ensure that the knowledge that we gain and share is relevant to the missions of the United States
What is AAOP? AAOP stands for America’s Army our Profession. AAOP was made to inspire soldiers and civilians to recommit themselves to a culture of service and to follow the Army ethic and culture. They’re five characteristic’s to the Army profession and they are, trust, commitment to effective and ethical stewardship of the Army profession and to strengthen the Esprit de Corps. Organizational Setting: Army Reserve Careers Division The United States Army Reserve Careers Division (ARCD) is a specialized unit within the United States Army Reserve (USAR). ARCD is composed of Senior Noncommissioned Officers and field grade Commissioned Officer. These technical experts serve countless hours to ensure the strength and the readiness of the USAR is achieved according to the guidance set forth from the United States Congress. Broadening is achieved through career with experiences and education in different cultures and organizational settings. There are different opportunities in the Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) that could represent an opportunity to broadening their career, these are in the area of Recruitment, High Head Quarters (HHQ), Instructor, National Guard Bureau (NGB), Title 10 or a Nominative position. The best combination to broadening and stay competitive is that we can have NCOs that meet the requirements of the NCOPDS and in turn have the growth that the Army needs. Broadening NCOs are better able to operate in complex environments. After grounds conflicts and look to the future, it has been learned that the domains of learning should be expanded by providing institutional, operational and self-development educational level to the
From the lesson of training, I also realized the weight that officers hold when it comes to building trust, motivating, and pushing their soldiers. They are going to expect the utmost level of skill as well as professionalism that you must provide as an officer. In return, it is your right to expect the same level of excellence from your soldiers, being there to push them above the standard and holding them to being experts and professionals. This is a trait that no matter how skilled you or your soldiers may be, there will always be room for constant improvement and
Knowledge is a resource that increases in value to an organization as it is used (Brajer-Marczak, 2016). It is essential that leaders and organizations throughout the Alabama National Guard have access to all necessary organizational knowledge for a multitude of reasons. Depositories of knowledge in organizations serve numerous functions to include sharing and disseminating information, increasing awareness, and communication of values and best practices (Brajer-Marczak, 2016). The primary reason is for all departments and units in the Alabama National Guard to have access to a central repository of all regulations, historical documents, plans, guidance, and best practices in order to conduct daily operations.
Warrant officers are the leaders of their field and experts in their trade. As such, they must be reliable, technically and tactically proficient, quick learners, and self-motivated, traits I already possess. I believe I have the necessary skills, experience, and leadership abilities to be a great asset to the Army as a Warrant Officer. I have more experience and training than most of my peers considering warrant officer as their next step. I have proven to be a dependable, capable, driven and a proactive non-commissioned officer throughout my career and have always sought out positions of higher responsibility.
My intent is to provide a clear vision to the 4th ABCT, that states, “Be the best armor brigade in the world, consisting of trained, responsible, motivated, and caring Soldiers and Families; capable of executing any assigned mission with unequaled success. The 4th ABCT has experienced several challenges that have led to ethical and moral issues along with a lack of confidence in the leadership. A vision will provide the ABCT with a motto, something to up hold. Therefore, how current business is conducted needs to change. In order, to make a change and address the challenges that 4th ABCT
Lastly, as a Warrant Officer I am expected to be the subject matter expert in my field. With no knowledge of my personality or past, Soldiers will expect me to have a high amount of knowledge on my particular field; therefore, I will need to ensure their trust in my knowledge is not wasted. The new found responsibilities that await me offer up challenging new challenges. I have always been a firm believer in the value of hard work.
We all understand how to be a good Soldier. We must not only know those values, we must encompass them. As Dempsey says; (2010) “The Army Ethic begins with the moral values the Army defends” (p. 12). As a Human Resources Sergeant in the Profession of Arms, we have a calling. We have been called upon to take care of so many in so many different ways.
Among these five characteristics; military expertise, honorable service, trust, esprit de corps, and stewardship of the profession, I believe that military expertise and stewardship of the profession are the two characteristics that make a leader excel in the presence of their peers. ADRP 1 defines military expertise as, “Military expertise is the design, generation, support, and ethical application of land power, primarily in unified land operations, and all supporting capabilities essential to accomplish the mission in defense of the American people”. In order to gain trust from your subordinates for them to follow your guidance, a leader must have military expertise. Without being an expert in your field, subordinates will not trust your guidance provided unto them. ADRP 1 defines Stewardship of the Profession as, “Stewardship is the responsibility of Army professionals to ensure the profession maintains its five essential characteristics now and into the future”.
The U.S. Army demands that all its members be accountable for their actions, equipment, records, duties and even for their fellow warriors. Planning for operations, especially during times of war, stresses the importance of
These are just a few of the army values and how they play an important part in an effective leader and follower’s day to day
A lot can be accomplished just in how we talk to each other. As a leader, I will talk to you, not at you. Take your position seriously - whether you are new to the Army or a senior leader- your role is important and adds great value to the overall mission. I’m a firm believer in doing your absolute best at all times; don’t aim for substandard. Remember that it is okay to ask for help, it is okay to not know something, but you should always be striving to learn and improve.
Based on my experience in the military my learning style is peculiar, I prefer learning though images, pictures and use of bodily movements all which helped while in the military. I prefer learning through self-study by using logic, systems and reasoning. Therefore, it can be said that my learning style is a mix of Visual, Solitary and Logical strategies. My study techniques employ SQ3R study method that consists of components such as “Surveying” the whole study material, designing “Questions” for self-study, “Reading” the material for stimulating understanding, “Reciting” to recall the learned material easily which is like call military cadence, and lastly “Reviewing” for transferring the knowledge from short to longer term memory.
Knowledge management is a process to ensure that knowledge developed through individuals and group work activities is effectively captured and made available to those who may benefit from it. An example would be to build into project plans the time for review and to identify at the outset how information, knowledge and experience will be captured, stored and shared with other individuals and/or areas of the organisation that may have an interest in the experience and knowledge gained as a result of the project. The importance and value of knowledge management has been brought into sharper focus in the current climate of financial constraint and the need to do more with
