ASSESSMENT OF ARSENIC IN DRINKING WATER IN POTISKUM METROPOLIS OF YOBE STATE NORTH EASTERN NIGERIA
Abstract
The presence of arsenic in drinking water has great negative influence on humans’ health. The concentration of arsenic in drinking water was assessed from six (6) sample locations in potiskum metropolis of Yobe State. The experiment was conducted for a period of fourteen days (2 weeks) using Arsenator, technology. The result of triplicate experiment shows that four (4) out of six (6) samples locations, representing approximately 67% showed the presence of arsenic ranging from 3.8ppb – 6.2ppb while in the sample site designated as Army Barracks area, that is, 17% arsenic could not be detected probably the concentration is below limit

Arsenic contamination of ground water has led to a massive epidemic of arsenic poisoning in many countries. Several major incidents worldwide had been reported on ground water arsenic contamination. (Tar, Eneji,Ande, Oketunde, Sba and Ato (2009). Research findings consistently revealed that Northern parts of US are known to have significant concentration of arsenic in ground water. Increased levels of skin cancer have been associated with such kind of arsenic exposure even at lower levels below the 10ppb drinking water standard as pointed out by World Health Organization (WHO). There is epidemiological evidence to show a close connection between chronic arsenic exposure and various forms of cancer, particularly when other risk factors, such as cigarette smoking, are present. Those effects have been demonstrated to persist below 50ppb. Ekairia (2015) noted that high level of arsenic exposure up to 10ppb.from drinking water can increase the risk for bladder cancer. Uzaigbe,(2017) posited that roughly 85 million people worldwide consume between 12 and 55ppb arsenic in their drinking water and this
A spectroscopy curve was produced of the acid and the absorbance of the unknown mineral could be obtained in order to find what that unknown copper is. Through these methods there is not preferred method when it comes to finding the percentage of an unknown substance, but which is more effective in accurately depicting what that unknown substance is. Standard deviation plays a major part in this experiment to help balance out and find the mean of the unknown substance to help constitute what it is. Through this the difference between smelting and roasting is that one produces a metal from its ore and the other drices off the carbon to obtain an
NAME: Zain Choudhary DATE: April 17, 2017 455: Response #4: Partnership and Ethical Challenges In the article “What Went Wrong in Flint” by Anna Maria, she talks about a major public health issue, where the tap drinking water was contaminated with high levels of lead all over the city affecting everyone in the area. She tells a story, where families noticed that throughout the months of drinking tap water, they have noticed many negative physical changes to their body. People started to have stomach problems, losing their hair and developing rashes throughout the city.
Other human carcinogens include asbestos, hexavalent chromium, aflatoxins and vinyl chloride. Carcinogens can increase the risk of cancer by changing cellular metabolism or damaging DNA directly in cells, which interferes with biological processes, and induces the uncontrolled, malignant division, eventually leading to the formation of tumors. Usually, severe DNA damage leads to apoptosis, but if the programmed cell death pathway is damaged, then the cell cannot prevent itself from becoming a cancer
Many unknown micro-contaminants are present in water. Some of the micro-contaminations might pose a risk to drinking water and human health. In many countries, surface water is one of the main sources of drinking water. The quality of the drinking water is influenced by many factors, such as agricultural and industrial waste, and is monitored regularly. Stated by the Journal of Chromatography, there are many techniques such as gas and liquid chromatography in order to detect the pollutants.
Drinking contaminated water can cause different types of cancers and also infertility and birth defects due to of the presence hazardous chemicals. Impoundments that have not been built or properly closed off have led to the death of many animals and also health issues in
Week 3 Practice Problems 1. The class handout cites 3 basic purposes for studying statistics: data reduction, inference, and identification of relationships. In your own words, describe these three ideas in a couple of sentences each. Why do we study statistics? We study statistics for 3 reasons below: Data Reduction:
Recent studies have shown that the water in Flint, Michigan has been contaminated by a horrible health impact, lead. This has happened because nearly two years ago, the state of Michigan decided to save money by switching Flint’s water supply from Lake Huron, to the Flint River a notorious tributary that runs through town known to locals for its filth. This has led to many terrible effects shown in both children and adults. The many effects lead has on children and adults are very drastic if not taken care of properly they could have lifetime effects. Dangerous effects lead can lead to that effect children.
Three main factors to this trend in cancer is frequent exposure to environmental carcinogens, inheritance of cancer genes and having a weak immune system. For instance, “ The results of the research indicate that DNA damage does occur in workers exposed to low concentrations of styrene.” (Doc. D) Since workers are frequently being exposed to carcinogens their cells are vulnerable to damage. A majority of these workers that come in contact with these carcinogens work in construction or agricultural fields.
The purpose of this lab was to change pennies from copper to silver to gold, like alchemists have attempted to do in history. Through the data and observations gathered throughout this experiment, it can be concluded that the pennies were not changed into a different element. For example, the density of the penny from 2005; which was the penny that was experimented on to see whether or not it could turn into silver; was 4.62 g/cm3 before the experiment and 4.89 g/cm3 by the end of the experiment. If this copper penny really would have turned into silver, then the density of the penny would be 10.49 g/cm3; which is the density of silver; by the end of the experiment. The penny may have turned silver in color, but this was only because it was plated in the zinc that was added to the beaker of water in the experiment.
- A hydrate is a salt that contains water as a part of its crystal structure. The hydrate used in this lab was Copper (ll) Sulfate Pentahydrate. To heat the hydrate in this lab a crucible is needed. A crucible is a heat resistant container used to heat things to high temperatures. In this lab a mole was used to determine the measurements of all substances.
Drinking water sources have been contaminated with explosive methane, as well as other dangerous substances, such as benzene and arsenic, that can cause cancer and other serious illnesses. Toxic chemicals, as well as erosion and runoff from drilling operations, have fouled
The results do not support the hypothesis that a higher surface area to volume ratio would result in sulphuric acid being diffused into the agar cubes in the shortest amount of time. This is evident in the results as the exact opposite to what was predicted occurred. Instead of the smallest cube with the largest surface area to volume ratio of 1cm3 having the quickest diffusion rate, it conversely took the longest at 0.092 cm3 per second, whilst the 2cm3 cube with 0.0384 cm3 per second took the least amount of time. This directly refutes the hypothesis. There was also no consistent trend evident in the results.
In an article I found through the Cline Library, using the same keywords (hair dye, health), I found an article that suggests that hair dye can be a cause of bladder cancer. In the article “Personal hair dye use and bladder cancer: a meta-analysis” they use an analysis to to prove the relative risk when using hair dye. Permanent hair dye is more likely to contain high concentration, especially if they are darker colors, which lead to a risk of urinary bladder cancer. The study is not yet a closed case, but it is believed to be more of a risk factor to hairdressers, mainly because they are exposed to the chemicals more often than those who dye their hair. The meta-analysis that was performed was a computerized search that they used to study more about the potential risks.
The Environmental Working Group found acetaminophen, caffeine, arsenic, and nitrate in 10 brands of bottled water." ("Is Bottled Water Better?" 1) Is it not a little scary to know that even if the water your drinking has a trace of danger, you may or may not be warned? It is also scary to think that mothers tend to use bottled water to mix with baby formula and that some of the brands they use actually could contain products that are potentially dangerous to their
In this essay, the discussion will point to Nile contamination as a controversial issue and highlight some health problems which occur as consequences of using polluted water in Egypt. Likewise, the essay will raise some scientific methods to determine the percentage of heavy metal in water supported by example. Then it will suggest some chemical technical solutions to reduce the percentage of heavy metals in Nile and reuse it again for many purposes.
