In this essay I will be exploring the nuances of the question presented. To begin with the irony in the question lies as the words used, "whole point", "meaning", and "purpose", while being compared to our "personal" lives. On one hand, purpose is a real or an imagined belief that something has a use or a reason for being. On the other hand, meaning is the value assigned to a belief. These words are homogenous when reinforced by the the phrase "the whole point", but stand separately through the use of language. Breaking down the words allow us to question whether meaning and purpose synonyms? Is the sole use of knowledge is to use to our personal lives or lives of a collective group of people? This activity prefaces with a reflection on art, the artist, and the utility of both. Oscar Wilde 's characters carry out actions that do not necessarily have a reason. What is implied is that art should not be a straightforward representation of reality--it should not be "accurate," as Algernon would say--but rather it should be an extension of its creator 's artistic styles. Hence, it should have "wonderful expression." Real art takes no part in molding the social or moral identities of society, nor should it. Art should be beautiful and pleasure to its observer, but to imply of far-reaching influence would be a mistake. Rio and others built art that was not perfect or had some deeper meaning to it.
