Art is an almost limitless vehicle for expression. It takes a wide variety of forms and is always evolving into new avenues of expression over the centuries. People have used art since the beginning. In prehistoric times cave art was used as a form of storytelling using pictograms. For example, cave people used charcoal to draw onto the roofs of caves. To this day, these drawings depict the hunting of animals and record part of the lives of people long ago. This is an example of one of the first purposes of art as a historical record. Throughout time various cultures would use drawings on tablets, walls, and buildings to depict important events and everyday occurrences. Over time, gradually art took on other roles and forms. For example, in ancient Rome villas would depict pleasant scenery. These murals can still be viewed today in the ruins of Pompeii. In addition, both Rome and Greece used sculptures to celebrate and memorialize the human form. Art can be broken down into these different types: representational, abstract and nonrepresentational art. Representational art is often the first type that comes to mind for many people.
An example of visual arts can be seen not just in their paintings, but in their theater plays. Theater is portrayed in Document 6, an excerpt from Sophocles’ play, “Antigone.” According to the Document, the play is about Antigone, who “defies the king’s orders and buries her brother, who was killed while leading a rebellion.” This clearly shows a strong example of art, as the Greeks are performing in unique plays that they created. Even though much of Greek art was meant to honor the gods, those very gods were created in the image of humans”( Ushistory.org, 1). Ancient Greek sculptures made of either stone or wood and very few this day. Some sculptures the greeks made were freehanded, human form and preferred nudes.
The three types of Ancient Greek art were a progression of styles than began in approximately 700 BCE under the Archaic style. The Archaic style was very primitive and can be likened to Ancient Egyptian art and sculpture. The Archaic style would display the human body in very rigid and unnatural forms. Archaic sculptures were also well known for the “Archaic Smile”. Historians believe that the Greeks displayed their human sculptures with a smile to signify that they were representing someone who was “alive”.
