REVIEW OF LITERATURE
Shaun McNiff (2002) wrote that art therapy is a way of conveying a message that cannot be put into conventional language. And this is true; art isn 't that only of beauty but also of what lies behind the paint of a canvas or behind the layer of lead on a page.
Background:
How is art part of our society?
When considering the history of art, it is a long series of revolutions and adaption 's. From Ancient art to pop art, but how does all of this fit into our society? What is the relationship between art and its role in society? Many peoplebelieve that art merely imitates life: which a painter represents what he or she sees by putting a scene on a canvas, that a sculptor does the same with wire or clay. A photographer or film maker does it even more directly in portraying just the everyday scenes. A writer describes life in books. This simple concept is known as mimesis (Dictionary.com 2002). But some argue that art can also change the way people look at the world and society, then could you not also say that art reflects life, that people change life into some artwork. (Dunn 2013). Many times art is this, what a person sees, they paint but it is not

Thus when internal stress is externalised by producing 'non-artistic ' art the therapist with the client can solve the problem in a better manner (Riley, 2001). The casual approach with art therapy usually takes clients by sunrise, because of the non-threatening communication form the teenagers feel they have more control; this counteracts the fear of being exposed. Art therapists use materials that evokes the artistic side like oil pastels, clay or paint, all these materials have their own expressive process. The therapists are not interested in the verbal examination with the client but rather their opinions on their own world expressed through imagery (Riley,
Art has been around for centuries, expressed in various ways through different mediums; painting, drawing, photography, music, and so many more. Each having smaller categories within them. One can create a portrait with different types of paint, chalk, pens and pencils, the lens of a camera. A musician can convey a feeling within lyrics, or notes of a song. Separate forms of art, yet if you look closely enough, you can see similarities as well.

Therapeutic art is used to assist people in understanding who they truly are and how they have grown from their past and any traumatizing experiences they may have experienced previously. Author, Laurie Halse Anderson explains the struggle of being the high school outcast through character Melinda Sordino. Anderson uses Melinda 's evolving tree artwork to symbolize past calamities in Melinda 's life, as well as how Melinda is growing as a character throughout her freshman year of high school. While Melinda is struggling most, she struggles with finishing her trees the way that she wants them to look.
This is a hypothesis I will be testing and analysing throughout the art therapy group I will facilitate with the children in the
Art is the force that bonds humans, connecting people across both seas and centuries. It is simultaneously historical and futuristic, original and inspired, intimate and distant. Without art, humanity and relationships are lost. Though art doesn’t always involve language, it is a universal communication tool that allows people to cope with trauma and bond with one another, no matter where or when they reside. Works of art incessantly draw from and inspire one another.
Merleau-Ponty, the French philosopher, writes that philosophy is “not the reflection of a pre-existing truth, but, like art, the act of bringing truth into being.” (Merleau-Ponty, 1969) Betensky (1995) wrote "phenomenology offers an answer to a long needed unbiased approach to art therapy in all its spheres: theory, training, and professional practice.” She articulates the importance of 'seeing ' and suggests that this is art therapy 's most important contribution to general therapy and even to phenomenology itself, because art therapy pays attention to the authentic experience in two ways. First of all there is the direct experience of creating art and second of all there is the direct experience of looking at the art. The second direct experience requires some help to learn how to look in order to see all that can be seen in their art expression (Betensky,
(Art Therapy Saves Schizophrenic Hit By Two Penises by, Susan Donaldson James). Furthermore the contributions that art has had on the mentally ill is extraordinary,
Art is like a language, ideas and thoughts that may not be able to be articulated any other way. The big debate is whether artist artwork is a waste of resources and time, or if it is good for the world with all the creativity and the beauty it has. Art is more than justifiable to enjoy it. The enjoyment of art gives modern
Art is known to have impacted humankind as from time memorial. In many occasions when people wanted to pass the information, they were only using paintings to communicate. Many kingdoms were known to give information about their values and beliefs through paintings made on their walls. Most of the paintings use to speak a lot about the religion of the Kingdom, and sometimes romantic pictures were used to expound more on how such kingdoms were committed to taking care of individuals emotions. Baroque paintings were used especially for matters to do with religion.
Eileen Miller said that “Art can permeate the very deepest part of us, where no words exist.” Every person experiences emotion, and for some people these emotions are more prominent than they are for others. A great deal of those emotions are negative and make a person’s day to day life difficult to manage. Art is a beneficial form of stress relief and self-expression for several individuals. Research has shown that art therapy is a reliable and valid therapeutic treatment that reduces depression, improves social anxiety, and assists in treating individuals with many types of phobias.

For children, drawing involves both a process (making of art) and a product (the completed art expression). These drawings need to be considered within the context of the child’s developmental, social, cultural and emotional experiences. (Malchiodi, 1998). I have chosen to examine three drawings by C, an 8-year-old girl I have been having therapeutic play sessions with. She was referred to me by her father, due to her inability to concentrate at school, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, which cause her to get into trouble at school, and in social situations.

It is unique to the eye of the beholder, it can be interpreted in many ways, and it can be either very complex or easy to decipher. The artists takes all its feelings or perspective out through creation.
