According to Steve Chapman, the Texas flag is seen as a unique, honorable symbol for Texans. Its design is one that can be distinguished from afar and is one of the elements that Texans are proud of. In addition, the flag is the only flag that can be flown at the same height as the United States flag! However, what makes the Texas flag so distinct?
In the “Flag Poll” article, Steve Chapman mentions that the Texas flag is different from others because of its exclusive design. Some flags flown by other states are described as unappealing, ordinary, or are hard to see. My favorite opinion in the article is the way he describes the flags that lack originality; “Nearly half of them are dreary variations on a single theme: blue rectangles with …show more content…

Chapman mentions the states of California, South Carolina, Washington, Alaska, Arizona, and New Mexico having features that make them unordinary. For instance, South Carolina contains a crescent moon on its right side and palm tree in the middle, which is the only flag in the U.S. with a visible palm tree. Washington's flag consists of a portrait of George Washington in the middle and is the only green flag in the United States. In my opinion, I would say that California’s flag has the best design because there are no other flags that look similar to it. The California flag is white with a thick horizontal red stripe on the bottom, a red star on its right side and a grizzly bear on green grass. The Texas flag’s design contains one blue vertical stripe that has a width equal to one-third the length of the flag with a five-pointed star located in the center of the blue stripe and the two equal horizontal stripes, the upper stripe white, the lower stripe red, and each having a length equal to two-thirds the length of the flag. Its bold colors are easy to distinguish and its design is very clean making it easy to picture its details. Although the Texas flag is easy to see from afar, it could be easily mistaken by Chile’s national flag and so in my opinion lacks that unique design.
Despite of the Texas flag similarities to other flags, I am sure most Texans are proud of the state flag. Why? The meaning behind the Texas flag is what makes a Texan to be proud of its flag. The blue symbolizes loyalty, the red stands for bravery, and the white signifies purity; the star represents all of Texas and stands for our unity as one for God, State, and Country. The five points of the star represent the characteristics of a good citizen which consist of fortitude, loyalty, righteousness, prudence, and broadmindedness. What citizen would not be proud of such
