The Articles of Confederation were not the ideal set of laws that the founding fathers intended. They had their flaws, but they also contain a few laws that fixed some current problems of the country. The problems that faced the new nation were, the need for unification and preservation of this unification of the states, the rules emplaced on expansion and settlement of western lands, and it set up a economy, that was vital to the country. The states had just won the revolutionary war by coming together to fight the British, and the Articles of Confederation made sure that this unification was official and permanent. The states had their strengths in numbers, and they could not afford to loose a state during their delicate growing period.
Summary: The creation of the Article of the Confederation took place in Pennsylvania, which was created on November 15, 1777 after the Revolutionary war. This was when the members of congress noticed that they should have a rule that will help them be organized and be stablized. The purpose of the confederation was to get a government that can be in union after the Revolutionary war. Analysis: There were several of reasons why confederation was created and the purpose was mainly to give authority to the government and the citizens went along with how they ruled and followed the rights. Some of the purpose was to expand America and Great Britian motivated Confederation so that they can individually govern themselves.
After the independence of the United States was a good thing, but at the same time there were problems with the creation of the nation. First problems began with the Articles of Confederation because in 1777, the Articles of Confederation established a weak confederal Government that operated until 1789. The articles were a compilation of plans written by the Governors of each of the thirteen colonies. Although it was an important step toward unification successful, the weakness of those articles was giving no importance to all the problems of the young country. This document, however, would not be effective without the ratification of the thirteen States.
First, there were a lot of problems with the Articles of Confederation. The Articles were not at all powerful and were not good for America. The US didn’t have a lot of money and they barely had any power. Under the Articles, the state possessed more power than the federal government.
The House of Representatives in congress had unfavorable rules for smaller states, therefore causing America to spiral into political dissent. For example: states like Virginia had less influence and power in decisions than Delaware (doc. 4). Bigger states had more say because the representatives were relative to the number of free people, the smaller states had less say in bigger and more important issues, as they might not be taken seriously because of their small numbers (doc. 5). As the people made decisions, the bigger state would tend to be more listened too and, as a result, riots and uprisings formed, mostly from the smaller states.
Two contradicting ideas in one document, how is that possible? The Constitution was created in 1787 to replace the Articles of Confederation. The Articles of Confederation was a unicameral legislature, led by the Confederate Congress, that caused many problems between the government and the people. It failed for many reasons, including the fact that all thirteen states needed to be on the same page to ratify the Articles and it was not able to create a united, powerful nation. Congress also did not have the power to “enforce taxes, regulate commerce between states, and compel state cooperation,” to escape debt (Benson 1).
The idea unity and self-government has been germinating among colonies, especially when England started to levying taxes in his colonies. And thus before the revolutionary victories in Village green in New England and the historical defeat of the almighty England in Yorktown in 1781, the now independent from Great Britain rebelling colonies realize from their historical experiences that a document of law needed to be crafted and established to preserve its new found independence, while maintaining order. The Articles of Confederation was the first system of government that was proposed and was ratified by all thirteen colonies in 1781. This quote was written about the Articles of Confederation "Perhaps the greatest service rendered by the Articles
1) The first problem with the Articles of Confederation was that Congress could not raise taxes and had no money of its own because the States collected taxes and were reluctant to fork over any money to the Congress. Article one section eight of the constitution tells Congress they have the power to collect taxes which fixed the problem of no body giving money to the Congress Article one section eight also solves another one of the main problems of the Articles of Confederation which was that a weak central government had a hard time standing up to foreign enemies. In the same section that solved our problem of money for the central government it also authorized Congress to raise an army. The third problem was the Articles of Confederation
Many people would say that the Articles of Confederation is a disaster. I agree that the Articles of Confederation is a failure and needs to be revised or replaced completely. These 13 colonies are more like 13 different countries. Every state has their own currency. The Government currently has very limited power over the states.
Under the Articles of Confederation was a new set of laws that were set up by the new government. Problems that occurred was that land was to be split and people on Northwest Territory had to get the land split into different states. At first this was a problem, but it led to the Land of Ordinance and the Northwest Ordinance which was a Confederation success. A negative was a need for a stronger government which started Shay’s Rebellion.
The Articles of Confederation failed because they did not give Congress and the national government enough power. The new Constitution addressed many of the problems created by the Articles. The central government created by the Articles was weak. Congress could not regulate trade or agreements between the states or with other nations. American citizens wanted a fair system that could unify the state and protect their rights so that's why the founding father created the constitution.
Gabriela Velazques Professor Peshkoff 28 October 2015 The Articles of Confederation: States prevail, Congress fails to The Article of Confederation was a promise for united colonies, but it did not take long for the promise to change. The colonies had no clear intentions of running as a union due to its previous history with Great Britain. Colonies wanted to remain together, just not under one authority. The Articles of Confederation remained as the first constitution of the United States for less than a decade after various disagreements arose between states, and also Congress.
The Articles of Confederation was full of weaknesses from the start. It provided no federal courts and no power to enforce its resolutions and ordinances. It had no power to levy taxes and had to rely on the states to provide the budget, which was often ignored. The government wasn 't able to regulate interstate and foreign commerce. Essentially, under the Articles, the government was not a uniform entity supported by the states, but a jumbled nation of states governing themselves under a common name.
Following the Revolutionary War, America had just gained independance from Great Britain and needed to form a new government. The Articles of Confederation were established as an attempt to create a government that was unlike Britain’s. Unfortunately, the Articles of Confederation had several weaknesses. When in the process of repairing those weaknesses, the Federalists and the Anti-federalists formed. The Articles of Confederation were very weak as well as useless to America and because of this, the Federalists and the Anti-Federalists could not agree on a new type of government.
The Articles of Confederation were a document seen as the “first” constitution of the United States. This document granted the new national government power to control the military, declare war, and create treaties between the states. However, the Articles had holes in it considering the government did not have the power to tax, create laws without at least nine states’ approval, or change the Articles of Confederation without a unanimous vote. This means that the country soon fell into debt and petty arguments between state, the new government had no control. It was time for a change.
In one hand, the Articles of Confederation had a weak central government, differing form the strong central government in the Constitution. The Constitution’s government had a structure of three different branches; the legislative, executive, and judicial branch; unlike the Articles of Confederation that had no structure whatsoever. The Articles of Confederation had many problems like, the poor international trade, poor foreign relations and a weak economy in contrast to the Constitution that only had one problem, the struggle over the ratification. the Articles of Confederation achieved the Northwest Ordinance and the Northwest Territory and according to a history website, the Constitution achieved that we had a system of checks and balances, that we had a bill of rights, and, eventually, the survival of a bloody civil war intact. Lastly, the Constitution had three compromises: the Great Compromise, the Three-Fifths Compromise and the Slave Trade compromise.
