In 1620 the Pilgrims made it to Plymouth Rock. They were the first official settlers to make it to America. When they got there, they were so accustomed to their way of doing things they found America a difficult place to live. Fortunately for them, the Native Americans had already been there for awhile and adapted to the living conditions. The first settlement in America was in Jamestown, Virginia. The majority of settlers in Jamestown were Protestants. Protestants were in America to become wealthy. Close by were the Puritans who settled in Massachusetts. Puritans were similar to Protestants but Protestants were not always Puritans, this falls under the category of social and cultural advancements in the United States.

The Articles of Confederation the first official government America had which wrecked the economy. Although it was awful it stayed in place for twelve years. The Articles of Confederation essentially scripted that each state could posses its own freedom and they were all suppose to work together so the whole country wouldn't go down in chaos. The federal government was a very flimsy government that printed money but did not tax the states, they were weak and had little control. This created a huge inflation on general prices for food and other goods which ruined the economy.
