Present day society is about to face unprecedented economic turbulence as a result of advancement in the capabilities of Artificial intelligence. AI will enable more advanced and more complex forms of automation that will harm countless jobs (Weber). Nevertheless, according to professional services firm PricewaterhouseCoopers “AI could contribute up to $15.7 trillion to the global economy in 2030” (Rao 3). In addition, AI will create new jobs, however the jobs created will require more skill and training than those lost. There are a number of economic and political measures that can be taken to hedge against these risks so that many of the benefits are taken advantage of at the lowest cost. According to the World Economic Forum “Currently, Artificial Intelligence (AI), the intelligence enabler for robots, is rather narrow (some might argue limited), which is why automation is very nuanced and focused on certain tasks. Yet, in the future, AI is likely to develop more general capabilities, which will translate into multidisciplinary robotic labour and more software solutions with human-like reasoning” meaning mass job loss is relatively unlikely in the very near future but will become a serious concern as AI and automation capabilities inevitably improve (Weber).This is what makes AI so dangerous from an economic perspective. McKinsey Global Institute estimates “that between 400 million and 800 million individuals could be displaced by automation and need to find new jobs by 2030 around the world, based on our midpoint and earliest (that is, the most rapid) automation adoption scenarios” (McKinsey Global Institute 11). The problem will only continue to get worse as the capabilities of AI advance since more tasks will be able to be automated. In order to maintain the human workforce while not hindering technological advancement, there needs to be a change in our education system. According to Harvard Business Review “ with AI taking over routine information and manual tasks in the workplace, we need additional emphasis on qualities that differentiate human workers from AI — creativity, adaptability, and interpersonal skills” (Kosbie). The article further explains that this means expanding computer programming at the high school level “with the world becoming increasingly digital, computer science is as vital in the arts and sciences as writing and math are. Whether a person chooses to become a computer scientist or not, coding is something that will help a person do more in whatever field they choose. That’s why we believe a basic computer programming course should be required at the 9th grade level” (Kosbie). For the past couple of years people have said that robots will take over and dominate humans. This has always been a myth, or rather a topic that is brushed off of the shoulders. The articles discuss the same topic in a unique way but sway in view points. For example in the article “Rise of the Machines' is Not a Likely Future” Littman suggest that technology is not here to over take us and going to take over he suggest that AI is still in the work and has room to improve but we should use it to improve society.
As with the Industrial Revolution, the Robot Revolution has too been faced with many adversaries. As in the past many claim that it would be end of society as we know it, so does Craig Lambert in “Our Unpaid, Extra Shadow Work.” Lambert argues against the automation of, what use to be, human jobs. Lambert, an editor and writer at the Harvard Magazine, argues that automation has lead to a loss of 3 million jobs (861). Lambert also exclaims that “the robots are in charge now, pushing a thousand routine tasks onto our backs” (862).
We need people to program a device or piece of technology so it can go do things and function properly. Without people like this, our favorite devices won’t work and we wouldn’t be where we are with today on technology. By learning how to code we can create new technology or even improve our old devices and put new software it in, basically like an update on computers, phones, etc. Coding literacy is the best because without these awesome ways to do things we would all be crying, whining, and begging for something great. We don’t want to go back to the old days where we have to click or do multiple things to complete one task; we want a program or code that you can take the least amount of time and it completes it.
A.I. and other technology have been integrated into essentially all workplaces. According to Forbes, more than 90% of businesses have invested in A.I. technologies. A.I. will be able to do a lot of jobs that humans do but with less cost, less management, and less time. From the Gilded age to now there is a massive contrast between how we are having technology create more jobs to having it take job opportunities from people. According to the 2020 World Economic Forum report it predicts that robots will displace 85 million jobs globally in the next five years.
Douglas employs notable examples to support his claims and rightfully proves why AI is not as risky as seen by the public. David Parnas’ “The Real Risks of Artificial Intelligence” focuses on the unseen negative aspects of Artificial Intelligence. He argues that AI programs can be untrustworthy and even in some cases, destructive due to the programming approach that programmers take. While Parnas is negative about the concept of Artificial Intelligence, Eldridge see Artificial Intelligence in a brighter light. Both authors present their arguments differently in terms of tone, level of diction, examples and organization.
The author's purpose in writing “Robot Invasion” was to represent the effectiveness and relevance of robots in today’s society. Rise of Artificial Intelligence and Ethics: Literature Review The Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, authored by Nick Bostrom and Eliezer Yudkowsky, as a draft for the Cambridge Handbook of Artificial Intelligence, introduces five (5) topics of discussion in the realm of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and ethics, including, short term AI ethical issues, AI safety challenges, moral status of AI, how to conduct ethical assessment of AI, and super-intelligent Artificial Intelligence issues or, what happens when AI becomes much more intelligent than humans, but without ethical constraints? This topic of ethics and morality within AI is of particular interest for me as I will be working with machine learning, mathematical modeling, and computer simulations for my upcoming summer internship at the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) in Norco, California. After I complete my Master Degree in 2020 at Northeastern University, I will become a full time research engineer working at this navy laboratory. At the suggestion of my NSWC mentor, I have opted to concentrate my master’s degree in Computer Vision, Machine Learning, and Algorithm Development, technologies which are all strongly associated with AI.
