Many unconventional or controversial works are made in the international art industry today. Artists are people who make art and create entertainment for others to view and appreciate. I disagree with the statement that artists should be given absolute freedom for several reasons. Absolute freedom means that these artist are allowed to have full control over how and what they use to present their message to their chosen audience however these may cause certain negative consequences. The intended message conveyed in the form of art may be distorted, misinterpreted or be extremely offensive in nature. Moreover, giving the artist absolute freedom would cause more people to become more negatively influenced if the freedom is abused. However, giving …show more content…
Many of today’s lyricists have composed songs that are increasingly explicit. Many themes can be found in rap songs or pop songs that people hear regularly in the current society such as sex, drug abuse, cuss words, and violence. Most of the time the audiences to such songs are teenagers who are at the age where they are very easily influenced and in their rebellious stage where they are trying to fit in and do not listen to the warnings of other people. Teenagers are at an impressionistic age where they are very concerned with things such as identity or having a sense of belonging. Researchers from the University of Pittsburgh School of medicine studied 279 most popular songs from 2005, based on reports from the billboard magazine. This study showed that 77% of rap songs contained references to unaccepted behaviors such as drug abuse. Many teenagers are exposed to drugs and violence through the rap songs and it may cause them to try the things depicted in the lyrics. For example, three male teenagers in Duncan were alleged to have shot down a random male because they were bored. Authorities believed that the killers were just following the thuggish belief of their idols, one of which was Chief Keef who is known for his violent and aggressive rap lyrics. This shows that lyrics heavily influence how people act and the government should have the right to ban or censor such lyrics to prevent the teenagers from being influenced into committing
Benjamin Haggerty, or as many know him by “Macklemore”, is one rapper who uses his lyrics to inform and instruct his listeners to make positive decisions. Macklemore uses his music as an outlet of reflection especially regarding his past mistakes. One topic that many share a common understanding of is the dangers of drugs. Today, in especially rap music, drugs are glorified. Today, teens are constantly exposed to misleading images from the media and they truly do have a lasting impact on a young adult’s ideology.
The media has underrepresented Hip-pop by sending negative stereotypes towards teenagers. Therefore, the hip-pop cultures and movements of the 1880s through the 2000s had a negative impact on contemporary young African American identities. This is due to the fact that Hip-pop influences the youth to do better than being negatively impacted by the society. In addition, hip hop teaches the youth that social media is going to throw negative stereotypes, in which teens could be aware of. Furthermore, hip-pop allows African Americans to overcome stereotypes through expression of the music and culture.
Firstly, McBride claims that rappers use violent lyrics as a vehicle to bring about awareness and thus promote social change through use of violence. In a section of the essay, he talks about how rappers have made hip-hop go from something you would hear at a party to something you would hear in a local news report because rappers use violent lyrics in order to talk about the issue in their society and how these issues must be acted upon now so that it can
Politically driven hip-hop songs often struggle to achieve popularity because American music consumers prefer music with easy accessibility. However, there are cases where politically driven songs race up the charts which parallel situations in the book “The Hate You Give”. Today hip-hop is the most popular genre in the world with trap rap and mumble rap as the most popular sub-genres. Most trap rap and mumble rap songs, do not have a strong political message, instead most focus on drugs, the rapper’s emotions, or the amount of money they want others to think they have. With less of a strong lyrical message in content, political substance in hip-hop is often in the shadows.
As reviewed in class, many adult Americans used to think that Rock and Roll and it’s exponents were a “bad influence” to teenagers back on the days. It is important to point out that many social changes on that time were a result of sociocultural modifications around authority figures like the government, parents, school authorities, etc. With the influence of Rock and Roll, people started to question topics like: religion, politics, social structures and sexual statements and teens showed attitudes against any form of authority that tried to control them. After World War II, adolescents showed more violent attitudes against social statements at that time.
True freedom is without obstruction or restraint yet there are ways in which freedom leads to restraint. Many advances and opportunities gave rise during 1865 and 1910 in America along with it came a sense of freedom for the people who migrated or resigned there. People like Jurgis had the freedom to work, earned money, and own a home of their own, but in all reality they were not free but trapped by the very things that they had the freedom to obtain. Industrialization was a big thing in The United States and everyone wanted to be part of it immigrants like Jurgis would leave their home lands and travel to the city where there was said to be an abundance of jobs and opportunities.
In the 1980s, we saw many different genres of music emerge, genres such as Pop, Rock, and R&B. But a new genre emerged that sparked a lot of controversy: “Gangsta Rap” otherwise known as Hip Hop. Rappers/Rap groups such as NWA, Run DMC, Big Daddy Kane, and more changed the industry with catchy tunes and lyrics that talked about hard topics like slavery, violence, and police brutality. These lyrics sometimes caused major conflict, whether between races or with civilians and police. Hip Hop was very controversial in the 80s.
The number of drug references in songs have increased almost 600 percent over recent years. A study showed that 69 percent of rap songs mentioned the use of drugs. It has become a trend in today’s music scene as almost every song makes some type of reference. As an effect of this teens are more likely to take part in drug activity because it has widely spread among the youth. When asked about their opinion on the situation a lot of artist replied that “it is a type of fashion or way of life”.
The explicit sexual language used had significant influence on the teenagers and youths in the major areas surveyed. The research proved that the lyrics have significant influences on the student behaviors in their schools. The lyrics are associated with alcohol and marijuana abuse. Most of the rap music portray images whereby youths and teenagers use guns, feel violence, and create gangs to terrorize and become popular. The negative lyrics create impacts on the listener, making him/her have negative perceptions and fantasies in life.
Background: In the 1970’s, Hip Hop music came out and became very popular and many people started to like it. At the same time, people didn’t like this type of music. Since Rap and Hip Hop became big, it influenced people to cause violence in the world.
Purpose of the study • The overall purpose of this study is to scrutinize the influence of Hip Hop music on the adolescents of South
Censorship of the arts is a highly debated and controversial subject that deals with what artistic content is deemed acceptable or unacceptable to the public in society, as well as the limitations of practicing artists’ rights to express themselves through art. In this regard, art should be a way to express one’s own opinions, but should not be used as a vessel for insensitive or malicious intent in dealing with topics such as race and religion. In this essay, I will be discussing this and two other reasons as to why artists should not be given absolute freedom in creating their artworks. These other reasons are that art may also cause controversy within society when dealing with topics unaccepted by conservative members of the public, such as political views that go against the norm, as well as shocking or, to some, disturbing content such as intense or extreme gore and nudity. While these are some reasons why art censorship can be justified, I will also be discussing a counter-argument to these reasons, which is that society should not shoot down views and opinions based solely on a minority that does not approve of them.
Freedom is the right to do what you want, is right to live where you want, is right to choose the religion that you want and freedom is right to eat, learn, drink what you want. There is one thing that limits our freedom: someone else’s freedom. According to a Boğaziçi University student Arda Seyhan, “We can live free by respecting other people’s freedom. We are living in a community which we all need people around us, we can not just ignore other’s freedom and do what we want to do for our freedom.” We should consider other people's rights.
First, the access to art is becoming increasingly open and available with a range of opportunities in the field. There is a
